Need to tap the collective knowledge of you all.

In July I'm taking a trip from Kent to Loch Lomond (one hit), then a few days on Islay, then a few days in the Lakes, the back down to Kent again. There will be 3 adults and a dog, plus luggage for us all for 10 days.

Renting a car would cost several hundred, so I'd rather buy something for close to shed money, use it for a couple of months, including this trip, then sell. Fuel consumption isn't a massive priority, 20-25mpg minimum would be nice. Enough space is priority one, followed by comfort. A/C would be nice.

I was thinking of a Range Rover, maybe a P38? Any better ideas?

A w210 merc e class estate? Dog and luggage in boot, one person can sleep on the back seat whilst two are up front.

the 320cdi seems to be available sub 1000 if you look about

5 or 7 series BM, plenty of seat room, massive boot especially on the 7. Get a sheddy 5 series touring and you'll have roof bars to play with, too.
A6 Avant has similar advantages.

I can't think of a worse choice than a P38 - a cheap one almost certainly won't make it and won't give 25mpg.

As others suggest I'd look at a large estate.

If you must go 4x4 I'd look at a Grand Cherokee preferably with an LPG kit

Friendly (hopefully) point of order: the older 2.2TID engine in SAABs is an Opel engine. It was the 3.0 diesel which was from Isuzu, and was fitted to the Renault Vel Satis too. They are very rare and have a well documented engine liner issue.

I have a 9-5 2.2 TID, 2003 (53). Engine is fine, although my auto gearbox went pop. Chain cam and pretty robust, if a bit noisy, but a great, comfy commuter car. Which is what mine is used for.
Thanks for the suggestion, ive had a few newer Saabs (and some old ones, the banger I buy is to keep miles off of my newly aquired 9000), and I've sort of lost faith with the newer ones. They're nice, just not for me any more after some bad experiences.

Reminds me of hiring an Almera 2.2D when we went to the Spanish GP many years ago.

We were running late on race day - on the motorway I looked down at the speedo - "What's 200 KPH I asked?"

"Er, that's 125 miles per hour," said the very nervous looking Swedish passenger who we had offered to give a lift from our hotel.

It wasn't even breaking a sweat - I was very impressed. biggrin
Glad to hear they've got some go in them, I'm quite keen on the idea of another nissan. If I go for the Primera thoigh I may fancy a remap as its obviously more car for the engine to be hauling around. I think they remap to about 160 which would be more than adequate.

I've seen a Primera in a garage near me for just over thread budget, heated leather, 2.2dci, reasonable mileage and a full history. Looks pretty good from the photos, I'm trying to hold off going to view it until my current daily sells. If I see it and like it, chances are I'll buy it, and have four cars parked up at home with only one proper space on the drive....

In the market for another shed soon.

Wondering whether or not to go diesel or petrol. I do enough miles for the diesel to be very nice on the wallet fuel wise, but perhaps I should play it safe and go for a petrol civic or something. At this end of the market is a diesel a wise purchase? Maybe it's a wiser purchase than a more expensive diesel, I guess if it's running and driving good on the test drive, clutch all ok then chances are I'll get a decent amount of use out of it?

I don't want it to necessarily be a chuck away shed, I'd like it to last a little while as my main car. Any thoughts please sheddists?

I can only comment on my experience. I've just bought a Passat 1.9 tdi with 251k on the clock and it seems reliable and drives pretty well.

I was thinking the same about petrol vs diesel for shed money... The thing is though, you could easily buy a petrol dog as well as a diesel dog at this price. If you're lucky with the diesel, it will save you quite a bit of money.

Although admittedly a jap petrol car minimises risk somewhat - my mrs bought a £940 Corolla a couple of months back, we've changed the rear pads and brake fluid and it's right as rain. It feels very solid and not at all about to throw up any big problems. Now I'm doubting my own advice!! laugh

I have a long wheelbase 4.3 V8 W220 on my driveway which is for sale and is going for MOT tomorrow.

July's a bit in the distance as I could use it gone soon but if you were interested talk to me.

To be honest, nor can I. It's a wonderful vehicle.

I'm only selling it because since I bought it I no longer have to commute to work, it's effectively become our 'spare' car and SWMBO refuses to drive it because it's so big so it's a little bit redundant.

Everything works on it and it's been outstanding. (Pretty sure I have the original receipt for £70k too)

The list of 'stuff' it has is too long to type out but the adjustable suspension and tiptronic gearbox are great for Scottish roads! The reclining rear seats will suit the pooch too providing it's not an Irish Wolfhound or similar.

It's on a 'Y' plate and has well under 100k on it, (I think about 90ish maybe but I can confirm later), with a full MBSH up to about 72ish I think and has been maintained by my tame mechanic who builds rally cars from scratch for other people, so he knows his stuff.

The only things that have gone wrong with it in the three years I've had it are...

1) The propshaft was out of balance when I bought it. (It's a known weak point.), This has been removed, straightened, strengthened and all the bearings replaced. (While this was being looked at the gearbox also got a full service!)
2) The pump that works the soft close doors, lumbar supports, rear headrests and central locking failed so I fitted a good second hand one.

...I'm sad to be selling it but needs must as I'm running out of space on my driveway.

It's one of the most consistent cars I've ever owned. It does everything exactly the same every day. There are no bad days and no good days, it just does what it's meant to do.

The picture I posted was when I bought it so it's not quite as shiny but it's not a rustbucket either. There's a little bit of brown around the arches, and the plastic around the driver's seat is broken but as I don't see it when I'm driving it I've completely forgotten to fix it.

The engine's healthy and had a full service, (All 16 spark plugs replaced!) maybe 10k ago.

The boot is HUUUUUUGE!

There's a Parrot Bluetooth thing installed that gives you hands free and you can play all your tunes off your phone through it too.

It's a GOOD car and I'm not expecting much for it, (in or around shed money.) so email me if it tickles your fancy. I'm sure we can come to some sort of arrangement.

The ironic thing, (considering the original post), is that I'm in Fife in Scotland.

The Merc' now has 12 months MOT.

It has one advisory for a small nick in the wall of one of the tyres.

Here's a pic' of it with a set of staggered alloys on it. They're not on it any more as I removed them to have them refurbished but never got round to it...

Oh yeah, the windows have been tinted since this picture was taken too.

Email me if oyu're interested in it otherwise it's going on ebay.

Oh it's not frilly at all, just a little brown showing through the paint on the arches and there's a slight scrape on the offside rear arch courtesy of some scumbag in a train station car park.

I'll email you and include my email address so we can chat off forum...
