AX sold before I could get a look... Probably for the best! Especially because of the appalling safety as pointed out above!

This looks good for £699 if anyone's interested.

Mondeo ST24. I've bought a couple of cars from the seller, decent enough chap and gives an honest description.
That looks great for the money
Doesn't it just. I'd happily run that.
Very much so, especially if he's not lying about the rust

Evening all ..
Well at the weekend there I took my first dip into shed and Bangernomics territory.

Meet Ted the shed ( which ironically is the actual size of one and has the turning circle of an aircraft carrier ) . He's a 2004 V70 D5 SE and I think still looks smart today despite being 12 years old...

.. and it is great not worrying about where to park in a car park , or if it gets the odd ding or a mark here or there biggrin
What did this big lump of 5 cylinder dieselness cost me I hear u ask?... £600!
Yes it has it's foibles, yes it has the Geartronic box so it will break at some point, it has a caramac interior that's not everyone's taste, and it's been round the world over 8 times, but I don't care! biggrin I love it! It drives well, has wonderful comfy armchair seats, and it's taxed , insured , does between 45 and 50mpg , and MOT'd til next year. smile Only money spent on it is consumables like new tyres, wiperblades and bulbs.

Classic bangernomics. Good cars, great engines. Change the gearbox oil and I think you postpone the inevitable crunch.

I'm looking at picking this up for my trip to Scotland at the end of the month - seems cheap but well looked after: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1997-JEEP-GRAND-CHEROKEE....

Any advice?

Bangernomics pros - i have bought a saab 9-5 aero the oil light comes on only at idle, the sumps been dropped and fresh oil and filter as well as that the diff whines.

Do i spend anymore money on gearbox/diff oil ? i have the use of a halfords trade card or do i just run it until it breaks or needs another mot in april?

The car cost £510 and has done 153k

Could just be the oil pressure switch. I had the same on mine, although that was a diseasel.

I've replaced the oil pressure switch.

Re the diff whine would it be worth changing the diff and gearbox oil?

Does it have a separate sensor/warning mechanism for low oil level? (as opposed to pressure)

On BMWs its common for that sensor to fail, and the warning light comes on briefly, shortly after you start the engine - more or less to tell you "I'm broken" - before going out again. On BMWs you can "code" the sensor out if you don't want to bother to fix it.

Not sure how Saabs compare.

1200 miles now in my £82 Puglet and it still works. Not only that, I'm getting around 68 mpg. I didn't know there were cars that could do that in real-world conditions. Peugeot 106 diesel - buy now while stocks last. As people have said about the closely related AX, the driving position is terrible, and the brakes aren't up to much (major brake fade in Milton Keynes last week, and I wasn't even in a hurry). But you could say the same about my bicycle, and that cost me more than £82.

Sounds like the ideal shed! What sort of condition was it in @ £82?

yes it has the Geartronic box so it will break at some point,
biggrin You will look like you can't drive. I have taken to ignoring mini roundabouts as turning right at one would mean a 3 point turn.

Yes, I don't worry about parking in a car park and if any bellends ought to appear in the Bad Parking thread, I can just park properly in the space next to them if it's the only one and not give a st if wipe the crap off my car with their nice clean clothes. biggrin

Is your gearbox flaring yet? I do get regular jolts. I was trying to change my driving style to lessen them but now I just don't give a st and will probably bin the car in the next 3-5 months.

Hahaha! Not experienced mini roundabouts in this car yet but in my Phase 1 V70 they were ..um.. interesting! biggrin
As for the gearbox yes it is worn. The previous owner did a gearbox oil change and had the latest software updated which helped. It does get jerky after a while stopping and starting , but through the gears its fine. Been told it gets worse after an hour of city driving but on the motorway its fine so far ( collected it ffrom Wigan and drove to Glasgow no problem).
Going to clear out the EGR tube tomorrow that's probably totally choked to death, replace the top engine mount, and clear any codes stored.
My only issue is I've almost spent the same again on tyres, new trolley jack and some spares ..don't think I've got the hang of this bangernomics malarkey! biggrin

silly

So basically, after upgrading stuff in the gearbox, it still has problems? I think I'll save myself a couple of hundred quid, then.

It's not upgrading as such. The 'boxes in all the Phase 1 and 2s were "sealed for life" by Volvo , but it showed as time went on that this was a mistske and you should change the oil to stop it self-destructing. Have you ever changed yours ? It is definitely worth it and doesn't cost a lot. It make changes smoother but it's also prevents the problem from getting worse.
The gearbox oil change is the important bit. I'm no mechanic but I did it myself on my Phase 1 V70 . It was easy ..you just undid the bolt underneath the 'box , let the fluid drain out ( mine was brown and smelled rotten ), put back in the bolt, and refill through the dipstick nice new red fluid ...repeat 3 times with 100 miles inbetween changes . not looked on the Phase 2 tho'. . Cost me £40 all in for the oil..that's it. Hopefully the Phase 2s are the same ( different oil tho ) but am going to look it up . It can't hurt can it?

I can't do it myself - I don't have a ramp for a start. Also, I'm a DIY disaster zone.

Even so, it's a cheap and easy job. Well worth the effort.

A decent enough steer against its contemporaries - at £450 including LPG it must be worth a stab if you're in the market!
