206 GTi, for £870. Full service history and MOT history looks sound. Looks tidy for the mileage as well.

That's why you test drive a car you're interested in buying. A better way of sorting the wheat from the chaff than assumption. But I wouldn't travel far to test drive this one!

sloppy gearbox, not much faster than the 140 version, very rough ride but resides that not bad cars.

(based on a 140 gti I bought for my mum, I paid £400)

You may be right - the 180 is only 0.5 sec quicker to 60 according to Parkers.

I had a nearly new GTI 180, back in the day. Always felt pretty quick don't think those figures do it justice. Anyway, think I would pass on this one, must be something not right punting it on this quickly.

Not going to set the world alight, but it's quite a funky little car.

Yup, just sitting here thinking "if that's the 'best' of the bargain basement, we might as well end it all now...."

I drove a 16v version a few times when I was 18. Felt so rapid!

Mazda's ostensibly workaday models have sometimes been quite interesting. Here's a 323 (sadly post pop-up headlight) with their dinky 2 litre V6 under the hood. Looks nice, and still reasonably contemporary from the outside. I doubt your £700 will do much better.

Just to add, is this the cheapest way into frameless-windowed doors? A pointless touch of class worth the price alone.

Great spot - I haven't seen one for years on the road.

I'd buy that for a winter hack if it was closer (2.5hrs away)

Use it in the winter?

That's brave, when you're talking about a 1990s Mazda wink
