Volvo V40 1.8i 5dr Estate

1998 reg, 96000 miles, Manual 1731cc Petrol, 5 door Estate, Green.

£495
From experience, you may want a bigger estate for a house refurb - I remember the original Top Gear review of the V40 by James May - he wasn't impressed with the load capacity.

MOT this year had a lot of advisories about corrosion. But for £650, if it lasts round to MOT due date next July before being scrapped, it's done its job smile

Toying whether to get a shed after my lease or take out a new one and been keeping an eye on Mazda3 and Mazda6 and seems just over shed money you can pick up some decent cars.

I sold my 57 plate, rather splendid petrol example for just shy of £2k in October.

They are good cars, but have their niggles.

Watch out for rust on the wheel arches. They will go. Avoid the diesels. The petrol's aren't the best on economy, but are revvy.

If you can get a 2007 onwards model, they are the facelift version. Mazda tried to address the wheel arch issue with this. However, when I sold mine, the thing was just starting to fall foul of the brown stuff.

Continuing on the Renault theme, i'm pleased with my current shed purchased a few weeks ago, 2002 Megane 1.4 16v Expression, 75k miles, MOT 'till May 2017...very clean all round condition.

£200!

Great deal.

They are pretty decent cars, the 1.4 has adequate performance, and I remember it being remarkably fuel efficient for the size car.
Thanks smile

It goes ok...not the most willing 16v engine i've used...but the car feels nimble and light (i think it's 1080kg so it is pretty light compared to newer stuff of the same size)
I got 42mpg when i first got it and it's at about 39 now with the colder weather, lights, heater on etc, so not bad. I think it'd do 50mpg+ on a long steady run but i've not done that yet.
Fingers crossed it'll do me for a bit longer before i fancy another change and move onto shed #24!

Where did you source that from?

Gumtree.

Just think it was a case of right place right time.

Very basic advert, minimal pictures or description.

I went not knowing what kind of condition it was going to be in...luckily it's a good'un.

Briefly - grandad gives car to grandson....grandson not interested and just want's rid. Was going to scrap it...it's far too good condition to scrap (he says...fingers crossed...)

Volvo T5 estate with black leather - MOT history not great but nothing major to worry about if engine and gearbox swap proof is there.

I keep my eye on there. As you say, the right thing can crop up at the right time.

You do have to sift through the rubbish though. smile

Now that, I like! 250bhp in a car that looks like something your nan would take her King Charles spaniel to the park in.

Top Q-car Shedding, that one!

Shame it's 200 miles from me, otherwise it would be outside my house by the weekend wink

Wonder why it had a engine and gearbox rebuild?
Poor driving standards?

Gearbox rebuild pretty standard on a Volvo of that vintage as the auto boxes were meant to sealed for life, but definitely needed some attention.
Engine rebuild is a different thing, not sure. The 2.3 t5's were meant to be bomb proof.

Either way, that's a lot of car for the money. Unfortunately I'm currently looking at chopping in my V70 2.4t for a D5 as more mpg required, otherwise I'd be off on a road trip to look at that.

I loved ours. It was a '04 MY so had all the bug fixes. Drove it into the ground and flogged it to a mate for £150 or so and he spent a few weekends restoring it to health. I borrowed it for a week last month and it really is a brilliant car.

I contacted one bloke about a Honda Accord. He told me it had sold, then a few days later queried why I asked about the car.

He told me he had to be careful as the police told him people steal the catalytic converters off Honda Accord's.

A few weeks later, I noticed that his ad had been reduced to about £100. In the amended description it said 'car now reduced as some bd has nicked my catalytic converter.'

Also, there has been an 03 plate diesel Mondeo estate on there locally for months now. I thought it looked quite cheap for what it was (around £600). Anyhow, it sat there at that price for a long time. Then, a few weeks ago, it was reduced to £400. Updated description now says 'injectors are beginning to play up, but car is fine'. Right, I now know why it hasn't sold.

Then you get the ads with date stamped photos on. There is a Seat for sale at around £560. Date stamp on the photos in the ad says May.

The large door mirrors and the non-modified driver information system in the cluster would put them off.

I guessed at the mirrors, but what's wrong with big wing mirrors when we're talking shed money?

What's the issue with the non-modified cluster?
