Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222383646551

BMW 325ti.

Would take some haggling to get in thread budget but looks good to me. Always thought the E46 compact was underrated.
That engine is a tight fit!!!

I have the same engine in my 5 series and at least there's some space to work around it.

so I picked up my £300 quid xsara.

it drives well. starts first time, no smoke, accelerates and steers well.

it probably needs new front tyres for the mot but im not worried about that. the back drivers door motor has had it as well and ive ordered another one for 15 quid off ebay.

I noticed however when I drove it away that as I reversed to get out of a parking space there was a sort of metallic scraping sound from underneath the car. I don't think its the diff or the gearbox, the car is silent when its on the move both from underneath and the gearbox, and the gearbox is smooth.

might be a bit of trim that's come loose or something needs tightening up underneath. it only seems to happen when I reverse too. doesn't happen when I move forward at slow speeds.

the exhaust system itself is only 2 years old from the service history.

very odd. fingers crossed its a bit of trim or something and not another knackered gearbox!

I'd bet on the gear linkage rattling on something, I'm assuming it's a mid-life Xsara with the HDI engine?

tyre is underneath haven't had a chance to have a poke about yet

1.4 model 85,000 miles on the clock, full service history as of a year ago - been well looked after from what I can see.

last poor bstard paid for new brakes and discs and wheel bearings in 2014 which cost him 600 quid..

Oh and its a 2004 model

Best way of descrbing the noise is metal dragging on concrete.

The gearbox seems good though so hopefully its a case of greasing or adjusting something.

Looks like I'll be popping in to see my mechanic Sava tomorrow..

That aside, the car is very solid. Goes through gears well, steering is good , no other funny noises etc.

I'll have to get the front tyres replaced for the mot but I only do 3/4k a year so will bung some hong key wee specials on for now

Is it one of those rare 1.4 HDi that qualify for the £30 a year road tax?

Petrol I'm afraid

Road tax was 185 quid which wasn't outrageous and the insurance was 600 odd (which is cheap for east London! )

Talk to me about Rover 75/MG ZTT estates. Mostly looking at the 1.8 or 2.0, manuals, 2001-2006 years (so pre- and post- facelift, I believe?). Anything to look out for, anything to watch or worry about?

On the 1.4 I think it'll be the MA rather than BE box, in which case the linkages are liable to rattle against the exhaust/heat shields if they're not quite fitted properly. Reverse is down from 5th, correct? If so that is maximum rearward+left reach, so maybe the joint where the manifold meets the catalyst needs swivelling round etc.

Yes reverse down from 5th. Good man I really appreciate your reply. Hopefully my mechanic can get it up on his ramp and sort it out tomorrow. I'll let you all know what he says for future info.

A civil question might get a better response than a demand.

Thanks again krikkit - you know your onions.

Ten minutes on the ramp at Cain motors today and I now have a silent motor- the heat shield needed a bit of adjusting and now it's all good.

At first he thought it was gearbox or engine mountings , but he got there in the end.

Unfortunately when his assistant was riding the clutch on the ramp to replicate the noise, one of the handbrake cables snapped!

no biggie, I've purchased the left and right cables off eBay for 7 quid each, and Sava said he'll fit them for me next week for 40 quid or so.

When I've sorted the lock on the back I should have a good car for under 400 quid! The good old boy didn't charge me to fix the noise either.

Were I looking for a cheapie right now, it would have to be this:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2017...

I had a poverty spec 1.8LX years ago, I did 100k miles in it and it never, not once let me down. Tyres is all I ever remember buying for it. One of the best value cars ever made, total quality. This one is the pinnacle of the species, and it lacks for nothing in my eyes. Perhaps it COULD be an auto, but meh, the auto boxes were less reliable than the manuals. Totally regret selling mine for a cheaper-to-run SEAT Ibiza 1.2. Gah. Bloody idiot.

I'm actually a bit sad that I'm not in the position of needing a car right now, otherwise I'd be on the phone and paying this bloke the asking price in advance.

well bugger me, after spending 2 hours faffing about taking the door apart poking at the lock with a screwdriver and removing half the skin on my hands, I was about to give up trying to open the back door of the xsara. I was also at a loss as to how there was the space to put the new lock on there as well given the lack of space to work with.

never the less I thought id try one last thing - remove the battery. I did that and no dice. I then thought, lets open and close the locks quickly a few times - and bingo! the back door came open. no idea why it didn't work before. im going to give it a damn good coat of wd40 shortly and keep my fingers crossed that I don't need the 15 quid rear lock that's coming my way off ebay which Ill stick in the shed in case I do end up needing it.

I think now that after the new handbrake is fitted, she should be ready for her mot next week.

speaking of the handbrake cable, my guy cant fit me in until next week. that's not a problem, but I thought Id give another local garage a call to see if they could fit me in. the bloke said yeah I can do it, but its a 3 hour job and itll be 160 quid. sava said buy your own cables (which I did - 15 quid) and he said it'll be about 40 or 50 quid - which is very fair. or has he underpriced the job?!

£400 for an Omega that looks good condition, not too many miles, has a V6 and MOT until August. I like it

Picked this up at the weekend as I needed a cheap diesel for my new 70 mile daily commute.

Paid a whole £400 and it's the HDI135 version with half leather and not badly specced.

Drives well - has had the dpf delete, needs a windscreen but that's about it! Only fly in the ointment is that the insurance renewal quote has gone from £340 for my SAAB Convertible to £810 - whole idea was to save money!!

Might be back to the drawing board this weekend!

I'm not so keen on the pre-facelift models, (although that's a semi-facelift with HID headlights.), and a 2.5 V6 isn't going to set the world on fire but for £400 it's not a bad shout at all. Looks quite tidy!
