This is the one I'm looking at.

Looks lovely and clean, and the MOT history looks OK (failed on emissions a few years ago but last couple seem fine; a few advisories a few years ago which haven't reappeared so have presumably been sorted).

What's the catch...
Looks very clean, the only question mark I would have would be the turbo and whether the cambelt has been done. I think the VAG recommendation for this was 120k or 4 years but I would be worried if someone left it until 120k before changing the belt!

Good points - it's a Volvo. It has had just two registered keepers. Less than 53k miles. MOT to Dec. Nearly half a tank of fuel. Engine sounds good and on the <0.5 mile test drive no untoward noises were heard from engine or suspension.

Bad points - it's 17 years old. Service history is laughably thin. Cambelt only 7 years past replacement date. Filthy inside and out, one rear window not working, EML light on (noted on past 2 MOT's!) and no sunroof. Some interior trim broken, many stains...
Congratulations. There are no bad points with an old Volvo, just character.
Actually there are - the late 90's V70 was notable for electronics that like to malfunction nowadays. I have had two of them, and both have had ECU/sensor issues galore, and investigation shows they are known for it.

Electronics are the new rust, etc.

That said, I really want a good V90 or similar as a tip/renovation/moving car...

The seller is trade and he told me on the phone he "would assume" it was done recently but that he needs to check the paperwork. Ho hum. Nowt to lose by test driving it, anyway. He'll give me 500 quid for my moon miles Mini Cooper as well - I'd get half that off We Buy Any Car and although I'd get maybe an extra £250-300 on eBay or Gumtree it's dependent on people actually wanting it.

Well that might certainly be an opinion.

Without trying to elevenerife, I've had 6 V70s and never had one with an electronic issue.

But nonetheless, I'd agree that electronics will kill cars.

Fair CdG - hope my "new" W124 carries on working. It's had a new wiring harness etc...

That really will last for ever! They're brilliant, aren't they. Sadly, my 124 cabrio is in the classifieds, C&C and the Bay - I'll miss it.

I know these are meant to be a bit crap, but for 595... would this be worth a punt?

Peugeot 307cc 2.0

Has leather. Everything works. Genuine reason for sale (am assuming that, as the seller wants a new tow car for a caravan, he's an older fella).

Will this be an awful thing to drive and be a money pit? Or will it be a nice, cheap way to enjoy that wind in hair feeling for the summer?

Aye, they are bulbous, ugly things, just thought as a shed they might be a decent proposition.

But you are right, the 306 is by far the prettier thing. And I did like my old 306 GTi as a driver's car - obviously the cab won't be quite as taut but I imagine it's still a good steer.

Its a tale old as time isnt it. Or as old as the internet.

Bloke with a high post count in a marque specific forum has a car he's put a lot of money into over the years and is now chasing to get it back. Assorted forum acolytes then start licky bum bum to back him up and to make them think their motors are worth much more than they are.

See every one make forum ever written to a server for examples.

Why? I'm not seeing the draw on this one. Its an ugly old beemer in a poor colour thats worn smooth with zero kerb appeal or cache.

If you want a tip car there is better for the money that isn't going to bite you with repair costs when it fails.
