Best of the Bargain Basement Vol. 2
Discussion
I've just paid £330 for this rusty 325ci with mot until dec.
The engine pulls really well, gears are clunky and vague theres a knocking from the back and the drivers wing and door shut are rusty.
Plan is to get it on a lift next week and see if the sills are shot , what suspension is fitted and what the knocking is plus a oil and filthy change.
Chaps, I'm about to start a house renovation project and could use some sort of estate for the purpose.
I wanted a 90's V90, but they look to be climbing in price and not suitable for trashing. But I would like something big, with character and loads of toys and cheap to run (ish - don't mind deal exonomy, but would like cheapish insurance, so something old would suit). Ideas?

Skoda octavia or Honda accord, I'd say.
Since when have Octavias (pre vRS) had character?! The poverty spec first gen must have been THE blandest car on sale at the time!!Accords are a fairly enjoyable drive and there's a nice subtle VTEC kick.
I'd go for one like this.

Nice K20A engine for the old man's Integra feel. It will be a decent drive. It's rather more modern as well compared to the equivalent Octavia in that price bracket, and it has some nice leather seats, not to mention acres of space.
However, if you are not a fan of the K20 there's a few 2.4i's for sale too, a bit more lardy but rather more shove with a 7.5 sec 0-60 time.

Hmmm - would prefer an auto though. London driving...
There's quite a few in auto. The manual is slicker and waaaaay more enjoyable to drive with the K20 petrol.I'd suggest getting the 2.4 i with the Auto then.
Here's a good one if you can stretch the budget by approx. £300 to get the car you need;

Boot space is 626 litres; that's way better than other cars of the era.
It's a truly great car.

That Accord looks perfect! Decent size load bay? Have to carry sheets of plasterboard...
I have an accord tourer, massive load space with the seats down but the arches do protrude, so you'll have to make sure it'll fit. It's a great car though, 2l manual, not exactly fast but averages about 37mpg and is very comfortable.
Old Merc estates from the unloved era of the late 90s are very cheap and a lot of high spec ones out there floating around.
They have been at a price plateau for two or so years and they sell on easy enough if you know how to punt them when your done.
Hint. Car boot sale and a sign in the window. I've sold two sheddy old estates that way. Damn sight cheaper than ebay.

Quite like the old Merc idea but I think the late 90's were rust-tastic.
I'd probably keep this car after the project, so wouldn't mind something relatively nice, rather than an MPV, which would probably be more practical...
Harry, I bought an MG ZT-T for just this purpose. Got a very high spec 2.5 V6 Auto and it took all the crap from a house renovation with ease. I'd probably keep this car after the project, so wouldn't mind something relatively nice, rather than an MPV, which would probably be more practical...
It was a lovely old thing.
I sold it for what I paid for it after a year.
