RE: Alpina B12 6.0: Spotted
Discussion
It will sell, although maybe not at quite that price as I sold a similar LHD car but with half the mileage for a fair bit less than that a few weeks ago.
I also own a RHD B12 6.0 and have been offered £25k for that. Although to be honest my daily driver 728i Sport is probably 80% of the car for well under a tenth of the price. Great model the E38.
But the typical E38 buyer is not relevant when it comes to these cars, collectors want them and will pay for the right car.
The 8 series B12 is a 5.0 or 5.7 by the way, sadly the 6.0 lump only came along after the demise of the E31.
Cheers,
Bryn.

Why would "they" have used a 735 with 750 running gear in the transporter, is that not just a 750 with a 735 badge on it?
Yes. They used 735is with 750i badges......By the same token, it's not "just a 750i[/i]"

Cool, taking an E38 round the 'ring! I imagine as you chuck it about at actually reveals a hidden talent belies it's size.
Yeah, pretty much. Our laps were wet, however, the cars impressed. It feels just like a dirty great 3 series, until the back let go through Kallenhard and the DSC had to step in.

In 'normal' suspension mode its comfy but doesn't like being pushed too hard.
In 'sport' suspension mode its stunning, controllable and delicate on the limit. Can also corner approx 10% faster (cant remember the exact figure) - better all round than my old 328i sport.
This thread is really really making me consider another

Sport mode in the iL also appears to be stiffer than the Alpine suspension fitted to my 740i Sport, which surprised (both cars on 18" Parallels)

MPG is overrated unless you live on the motorways.
I'd agree if we were talking about the difference between a 30 and 40 mpg car, but 15...That's well into 'Cant actually afford to run it' territory
10k a year would be £4000 and that's assuming petrol doesn't go up...

The problem with that is that the rear of any LWB car should be a very special place to be. That looks like a boggo e-class, and the aftermarket DVD screens do it no favours.
Those rear screens aren't aftermarket...To be fair, they're not much different from the ones in that S65. Or better integrated into the seats.

3k, assuming 135p per litre and 20mpg (a very easily attainable average, some tanks I was averaging mid to high 20's)3k a year for a car with no depreciation and such a superb driving experience, think of it that way.

Real autobahn stormer. Always liked these. Looks much better in flesh than it does on the pictures.
But 30k? Nah. You can find them around 10-15k.
Great! Where? But 30k? Nah. You can find them around 10-15k.
Remember this wasn't exactly a mass produced car so you won't find new adverts each week.
I've had most irerations of the E38 7 Series, and my most recent was a 1996 750iL V12.
Stunning machine, and totally agree with the 'Jekyll and Hyde' personality. The EDC dampers do make a difference, and the torque is sublime. They are also more 'bespoke' than the run of the mill 728, 735s, etc. Leather stitched dashboard and double glazed windows are a nice tough.
Funny that some people are mentioning the 330d...
On the drive back after picking up my 750iL, there was a chap in a brand new 330d M Sport Touring. He was giving it some beans, and we finally caught up at a set of traffic lights, with a good few mile strech.
We both floored it when the lights turned green, and he had the edge only for a few seconds. As soon as the 7 got it's thrust, it shot off, and calmy passed and distanced away afrom the 330d.
The look on the guy's face was utterly priceless!
And I didn't think it was that bad on fuel, for what it was.

No depreciation is debatable, maybe if you don't put any miles on it. Even a rare car like that is going to lose value as the miles build up and it's already on 97k.
It's a beast of a car but to be honest I can't see why I would choose that over a B10 V8s which could be had for a lot less or even a 740i. You could buy a minter of a 740 and then buy a supercharger which would give you over 400 bhp and still have change from £10k.

I had a 750iL. Loved every drive.
If you think a 330d is even close to the driving experience you're way wide of the mark.
Along with the rest of the drive - The sound, immediacy and torque spread of the engine is stunning.
Most versatile jekyl & hyde car i've driven (thanks to switchable suspension, gearbox and stonking midrange)
VED is £225 (or whatever the generic one is now) for all the e38's - due to their age.
MPG is overrated unless you live on the motorways.
Petrol is £1.32/litre last time I filled up.
Also, any e38 750iL isn't going to fall in value now, a 330d will carry on falling.
Dammit, I can feel myself getting another e38 750 :/
Lovely post, this regrettably is exactly the same way my brain works when it comes to my old cars, I'm talking myself back into them.If you think a 330d is even close to the driving experience you're way wide of the mark.

I was simply using Alpina's quoted combined figure. Whether 20 is easily attainable or not is going to depend on how and where you drive.

20mpg is not attainable with the 6.0 engine sadly. You can get close, but not quite there. No depreciation is debatable, maybe if you don't put any miles on it. Even a rare car like that is going to lose value as the miles build up and it's already on 97k.

And comparing them to other cars is pointless. Either you want one of these specifically and will pay accordingly, or you don't in which case you will buy something else.

Bryn.

I've been in this exact one before, owned by one of the chaps on another fortum I frequent. Only (RHD) B12 in Estoril blue iirc.
Not too shabby.
Can't imagine there are many E38s in Estoril knocking about, never seen one beforeNot too shabby.
Dave
As for the one featured, i can think so many interesting cars i could get for £30k plus a decent old 750i as well.
