There's the Renault Twizzy, which certainly isn't a performance car but has two seats one behind the other.
I've never driven one, but apparently they are quite fun to chuck around on a twisty road.
Whilst it was my second thought (after the McLaren Obv) I think the Twizzy is actually classed as a quadricycle rather than a car

I believe it is road legal although British roads may challenge its width. It's a multi-seater with a central driving position.

Is that the one that Joey drove in the last series of Top Gear, the episode where he picked up the naked ramblers on the Isle of Man?

I like that.

As we're pushing the definition of "car" to the limits, I give you the GM Futurliner:

Wasn't central, was it? It was offset to allow space for a passenger.

It was, yes. I must have missed the last episode in the series when it was originally shown because I thought it was a new series when I caught the rerun of that episode earlier this week.

The Motorsport Elise had one, not sure how many were made into road variants though.

I have one of these. Not a road legal car, but a few have been modified with the necessary bits to be made road legal. It is pretty easy to do - mine was a customer car and LHD. You simply flip the rack over and re-route the gearbox cables, thanks to the simplicity of the Elise dash. It's a cool feeling being in the middle, and of course safer too!

Slightly off topic but I think I remember a prototype from the sixties in which the steering wheel and pedals could be moved to either side. Sound a bit mad I know - but it may have been a Renault (which could explain it!).
Can any one shed any light?
