RE: Chris Harris video: Porsche 911 GT3
Discussion
Never wanted another Porsche more than I want this. 7.2 GT3RS has been firmly at the top of my must have list since it's release. This I think replaces it.
I really, really need a GT3, any of them will do.
Can't say I give a hoot about the lack of a manual box. Much as I love them, this seems to be in another league.

Just checked the price here in the US and it is $131k for the base car. £86k sterling at todays exchange rate. Looks like a positive bargain !!! Now I am just going to look down the back of the sofa for the odd $130k I am short on the asking price.
Plus tax!The impression I got from the video was that despite evidently being brilliant to drive, sounding fantastic, looks that would grow on me and blisteringly fast, I can't help but feel that the marketing department have had a large levering arm in the design of this car. The PDK has no doubt been influenced by the sales of double clutch gearboxes in all rival marks as well as the emissions benefit. The four wheel steering and especially the extra play station esque readouts shout to me as pandering to the younger buyers and, I hate to say it, the GTR generation?
For me, as uninformed as I am (I could never afford such cars), is that the GT3 has always been the best "mechanical" drivers car. If you wanted to have technology to help you go über fast you bypassed the gt3 and went for the turbo, gt2, gt2 rs.
Does look like it goes like stink though.

Now you've gone and done it and mentioned the GT-R! And what sir, may I ask is wrong with '...the GTR generation' as you hated to say?For me, as uninformed as I am (I could never afford such cars), is that the GT3 has always been the best "mechanical" drivers car. I am one of those you hate, I am one from the GTR generation and resistance is futile.
Except in this case, after watching Chris's superb scoop video, I seriously want one of these in my life.
But the GT-R stays
Fair point.
You just spoiled my day.... I had just found $130k down the back of the sofa, now I have to go and find another 8% or whatever it is

Plus tax! It's funny - last few months it became a possibility that I'd be able to buy a car of this price in the next twelve months. Shortlist was GT3 or AM V12 Vantage. Was leaning towards the Vantage because of the manual transmission. Now, in the space fo a few weeks, they've both gone automated manual only.
What's left for us that want purity? Seems those at the cheaper end of the spectrum (GT86) have a much better time than those slightly further up the ladder.

It's really interesting that the number of re-engineered 930 bodied 911s (like the Paul Stephens and Autofarm ones over here and the Singers and Outlaws in the USA) are on the increase while the newest GT3 seems to have lost its way. If it's now a viable everyday car then it's completely missing the point in my eyes.
Great car and as ever from Mr. Harris; great video.
Car looks and sounds great. Do have some criticism though:
- Never heard any criticism from any journalist on the steering wheel feel/control of the 997, I even heard it was the benchmark, it was perfect, now suddenly it isn't that good anymore.
- The car is getting porky, not only in terms of weight (almost 1500kg is just too much for a gt3) but also in terms of looks.
- Still don't like the shiny chromed steering wheel and gearbox surrounds, the standard steering wheel looks so much better.
- I noticed the paddles are getting bigger, again, but they still not look large enough; Porsche started with using buttons on the steering wheel, then they probably realized that paddles behind the steering wheel are much better to use, so they silently switched to small paddle/flap like things behind the steering wheel. Then they started using real, albeit small, paddles and now suddenly the paddles are getting bigger. Porsche just admit you were wrong from day 1, and from now on use the large paddles that Ferrari uses.
