In the nicest way she needs to ask a local garage or a mate. She'll be on her way in minutes (after you've paid the bill on your credit card).

Hmm... this'd make an interesting study. Is a lack of initiative hereditary?

I think you're all being really mean. I know that if it were one of mine in New Zealand I'd do what I could to help. OP, why don't you phone the NZ AA or a local garage on her behalf? You're unlikely to be able to diagnose and fix the problem from such a distance so get someone local to offer professional help.

Do you?

The guy said his daughter was on her own in NZ and the car was dead. This could mean she was in the suburbs or in the middle of nowhere, this information wasn't given. Then when advice is given apparently she is 'quite capable of sorting it' and the OP seems to question why people are being so daft as to offer suggestions. The obvious thing in this instance is to do something locally not ask the internet.

This is the strangest thread on PH for some time. It's beyond weird.

Light-hearted joshing =/= mean.

This is a really weird thread. An adult on the other side of the world asks her dad to diagnose a fault with her car, he gives a load of internet people a second-hand account and pretty much dismisses them all. I don't know what to make of this other than two related people have little initiative.

I suspect she'll still be there, walking around in circles and bumping into things.

To be fair on re-reading the thread you're probably right. I think I initially had the image that it was like the film 127 Hours rather than 'dad, my car won't start and I can't think who to phone...'.

Agreed.

If aliens reviewed this thread they'd never invade the Earth.

The title is misleading as well.

"Help! Daughter Stranded in New Zealand" made me think she had lost passport/plane tickets/money.

"Advice needed - broken down Subaru but I'm 13,000 miles away" would have been better?

Need some help with my daughters car. She's 20, on her own in New Zealand and her car wont start. It's a 95 Subaru Legacy that wont turn over on the key. Apparently the radio works but thats all I know. Where do I start to help her?
Just disown her, natural selection and all that!

I might be going to NZ in a few months, I could help maybe then.

This reminds me of the 'children abandoned in a foreign country' thread when an apparent Lord of the Flies scenario turned out to be a couple of 16 year olds having to get a cab across Brussels.
