New job I can bike to and shifts mean I'll probably only do the school run twice a week. I want something I can truely enjoy but can do the family duties at the weekend. I like forced induction and 4WD but will compromise plus I don't mind something daft but would like an idea of just how crippling bills could be.

I'm not so bothered about "feel" but like forces, accelerative, decelerative and lateral.

So working up the horse power list and looking for ownership experience and general opinions.

Saab Turbo X - Left field choice

Volvo V70 R - Rare

BMW 335i Touring - I find the shape a bit dull so would need to be the right colour and manual, rare.

Audi S4 Avant B7 - Probably most likely atm

Audi RS6 - 444bhp, so many scary stories but how about one with the gearbox already replaced and on coilovers?

Porsche Cayanne Turbo - Ticks so many boxes I'd like to tick, Porsche, V8, Turbo, 4WD but clearly the maintainance costs of a 70 grand car, I would only be doing maybe 4500 miles a year and if I'm ever going to etc.

Anything else? The only non estate I'm considering is an E39 M5 and I can stretch the budget by whatever I can get for my Legacy spec b circa £2600

Can't speak for any of the others, but you can see in my garage how much the RS6 has cost me in the last year and 5.5K miles. A year in which I had to replace the apparently astronomically expensive front brakes and have some bodywork done.

Mines on a replacement box on lowish miles and coilovers done by a previous owner.

Personally I love it and I'm glad I went for it instead of the S6 as I'd have spent all my time lusting after the flagship.

Focus ST? 225bhp Turbo with the lovely 5cylinder engine note, plenty of room and cheap to maintain.

Anything ending in 'AMG' would seem to fit the bill?

I'd say B6/7 S4 or E39 M5 for that money.

I have an S4 Avant as I much prefer estates for family duties.

They're really not that fast. Just bought a Cayenne Turbo for a little under £10k. Built like a tank and no regrets so far.

5 doors?

How about something a bit different, a Chrysler 300C SRT-8 estate should be achievable . It should be big enough for you, if you can deal with the looks and image. 6.1 litres of Hemi should bring a smile to your face too thumbup

The 335 touring is a good idea, have not had a touring (yet) but have had the coupe and saloon.
Test the sport version as the SE suspension on the saloon and estate is a bit soggy.
They drive best in manual form.
300 bhp and capable of 30 mpg +
Or get a 335 D diesel sport and budget a remap.

If you wish to criticize use of the term "fire power" a better place to start would have been "it's firepower btw" and "ugh, please" as a criticism is, er, well ghey smile

Thanks for the helpful suggestions, of course AMG should be on the list. C32 is too old and C55 out of budget, E55 certainly has the required firepo oh, I mean exhilarating abundance of performance but in estate form it's mighty bargey.

A good Evo 8/9 fits the bill. Surprisingly cheap to run, especially if you're handy with a spanner.

Impreza WRX STI hatches (08) are extremely cheap for what you get too.

Thanks chap, seems reasonable for what it offers. Are you on a low mileage insurance deal? I'm paying £480 on a group 16 car, I'm 42, 9 years NCB but not the best postcode apparently. I better do my homework on what a group 20 (or whatever that is on the new system) will cost.
