Odd car....?

Years and years a ago I seem to remember reading about these but have never seen one in the flesh,
so it this really an non 'M' version of the Z3 coupe?

I've seen it a few times this week, parked in Manchester, and first thought it was an M, but closer inspection reveals otherwise:

Certainly an unusual one on these shores, don't think I've seen many about. The proportions look a bit off IMO without the larger wheels and rear modifications.
