Afternoon all.

Just chopped our car in for a Volvo XC90. After coughing up the difference, signing the paperwork etc we asked where the spare key was. I know we should have asked if there was a spare key prior to doing the deal - but with everything else going on, that was something we missed.

Dealer says he can source one 'quite cheaply' for us, but thinking about it, one of the reasons I bought from a dealer was so that I didn't have to worry about the crap that sometimes goes along with buying a car privately. I suspect his has no intention of sorting this out frown

So, is it really the dealers responsibility to provide two keys, or is this just going to be an expensive lesson for me frown Quick Google and it looks like a spare is getting on for £300. Not the best Saturday afternoon!

Thanks!

It's a nice thing to do, but certainly not something to be expected.
Check the yellow pages for an automotive locksmith, they should be able to make you a key and disable any lost keys.

Depends what type of dealer it is, and what sort of car you bought?

Thanks guys.

Not a main Volvo dealer, but a sizeable dealer.

I would say it would depend on whether the original owner had handed in the old key. Pointless the dealer hanging on to these...

Also, how many, non PH type people, can immediately put their hands on their spare keys I wonder?

If you didn't ask then no.

We have a sign up saying that all used cars come with one key unless otherwise stated.

People haggle, want money off, free servicing etc then want a key (which for a Volvo from experience can be £300+) so it's best if everyone knows where they stand from the off.

Depending on how 'cheap' they can get you one I'd say if you need one, buy one.

I've made that mistake before. It cost me £230 for a new spare key! It is really your responsibility to check beforehand. I certainly won't make that mistake again.

I would expect,

  • approved used - all the keys usually provided with a new car.
  • substantial used car specialist - at least two proper sets of keys.
  • backstreet trader - lucky dip!

Do they have to ask about spare wheel as well? I would expect a dealer to point out any of the original supply items which were missing, especially the less obvious ones!

Yes people do ask about spare wheels in the same way people who are worried about spare keys ask about them. The likelyhood of a key being lost is a lot higher than a spare wheel. A large majority of the cars we sell don't have them from new anyway.

I thought all new cars had 2 keys.
When I brought both my Golf and Caddy I had two keys and they will be passed on to the new owner, I don't see the sense in keeping useless car keys.

Yes they should, lots of used now only come with inflation kits. We don't have time to point out every thing that's different from when the car was brand new. It's for the customer to ask.

How many previous owners does it have? It is worth giving them a call, explaining the situation and offering a bottle of scotch. Speaking from experience here.

I can understand people losing their spare keys, but are you saying that people are losing their spare wheels and replacing them with inflation kits when they trade them in?

Spares get stolen/damaged quite often. Lots bought at auction have no spare wheel or one that is useless. Inflation kits are cheaper than spares so dealers put them on.

1 previous owner. Dealer is going to call her. If I get no joy I will call her.

I appreciate that I should have been more thorough in the transaction. An expensive lesson to learn and probably tough cheese!

If the dealer can sort things out then great. I will of course give him the opportunity to do so.

For all those dealers that read this, I appreciate that you can't check every piece of equipment is in place on every car. However, things like spare keys I feel are a different issue. The bottom line is that if this isn't sorted by the dealer, I would never use him again and certainly wouldn't recommend him. I think for the price of a spare key, it's a silly attitude. I wouldn't run my business that way.

Thanks for all the responses and pointers on this. Very much appreciated!

Likewise - especially as some dealers won't sell you a spare key without a V5. So you're potentially stuck with only 1 key for a few weeks :-(
