Great video as usual. I'm honored that my little BMW is so highly praised against a car £10k more expensive (arguable yes but mine cost £29k).

The differences are marginal on track. Chris says the A45 is in another league but were talking fractions of seconds difference.

Oh...minor comment. Does he say that the auto is a £3k option on the bmw? It isn't.

Brilliant vid

AMG ticks all the boxes for me - a 4 second car, 4wd, that steering, those brakes for that price? Brilliant

And those upshifts!

Cracking video as usual!

I'm sure as a drivers car the BMW takes it but I'm sorry - that is one fugly, fugly car
The BMW is a beauty compared to that Mercedes slab sided Korean box, I like the look of most Mercedes cars but that thing is just dreadful and puts me off straight away.

What a bland looking car the A class is.

Fingers crossed BMW doesn't screw up the M235i. I bet the price suffers though.
I can't get past the looks of either car. The bmw in particular just doesn't gel. It doesn't even sit with their current design language. The 235i does look good though.

Every time Chris/Topgear/Autocar go to a track and start drifting and talking about power oversteer I go and make a cup of tea. I would never ever take my road car on a track and anyway any car that you would happily use for the commute and an occasional blast would be far too soft too be any use on track.

A45 AMG and £1k stripped and colilovered hot hatch for me please.

I suppose we will have to agree to disagree, I think it looks pretty sharp in the right colour.

I'll answer the question about the BMW if you don't mind wink

It's not a great looking car, nice from some angles, I had one for 4 days recently and grew to really like it, it's not as good looking at the M Sport 3 series but my god is it more interesting than the Mercedes, I have no doubt it's a proper weapon but it just looks so bland.

Those slow motion shots of the rear end of the Mercedes....

Chris

How would you say the AMG compares to EVO X FQ-360/400 please?

I reckon we're lucky as petrolheads just to have two cars like this on the market.

I've got a huge amount of want for both of them, no idea which one I'd choose, guess I'll just have to drive them. Oh, and dig up a spare 30 grand. Hmmmmm........

Agree, It'd be the BMW for me but I can see why others would go for the Mercedes, good times!

Another great vid from Mr H. Both great performance cars but for £30k+ or £40k+ I'd want something that looked good too.

It's funny you mention the Evo as they keep waxing lyrical about the Bhp per litre of the merc & it's Bhp & at first I thought they are good results out of a four pot but then I remembered about both the Evo's you have said, the japs were leading the way a long time ago.

Looks wise neither is stunning, though I don't find either hideous either. I've got an M135i and really enjoyed this video. As others have said I always ignore the track comments as I'm not going to track my car (and would buy a far better track car it I were).

BMW is softer it seems which I like most of the time though sometimes, on some very smooth british roads, would like harder suspension and less roll.

I love the Merc's upshifts but prefer the BMW's straight six in gear acceleration noise. I also prefer the purity and fun in cornering the rear wheel drive gives you (I've not driven the Merc so can't comment on it's 4WD, only driven 4WD Audis...)

The M135 has done well on the value factor that it's even compared to the Merc when the Merc's true competition should be the full fat 1M which is more price comparable. (As already said the 8 speed auto 'box on the BMW is £1.6k option not £3k unless it's recently gone up) - and as Chris rightly said everyone is getting double digit discounts on the BMW too, and finance at a strong 4.9%.

Great video, interesting to hear about the potential for LSD on the BMW, although if only using on the road, would it be worth it?

I just know that the AMG would be the one for me. Big drifts keep the fanboys happy but the 1er didn't look that comfortable doing them with the open diff.

Thing is, virtually no one drives their car like that but then it's always nice to know you can if you wanted to.

1500 odd kg for the merc though eek

40 odd grand for the Merc, :P, mind you - save a few quid compared to the video one and not spec those carbon bits, I mean, who would, frankly, that is pretty outrageous pricing, £3780 for a few carbon bits..... Pass, if you really need the look get 'em wrapped for a fraction of the price, lol.

I would guess the Merc doesn't need to be serviced every 6,000 miles though.

Neither do Evo X's.
