I'm pleased we're 40 comments in and no one has mentioned the Polo GTI. Quite possibly the worst driving experience of any car I've owned in my 20 year driving history. Got shot of it as soon as possible.

Shame, I reckon VW must cripple it so it doesn't embarrass its big brother.

I'll be in the comparatively subtle Mustang. wink

Horrible little car. 17k for a Vauxhall is a joke in itself.
Have you ever driven a Corsa VXR?

Serious Question.

He knows just how crap it is, so I'm guessing so.

I would take the Corsa VXR over the Astra VXR, I like its compact looks. The competition looks better matched.

I picked up a pre-registered Clio 200 in February this year for £13,800. It was registered in December 2012 and had 14 miles on the clock when I drove it away. Nimbus colour with recaros, no cup suspension or spoiler.
.
This article reminds me that I picked up a bargain. Pitting the 2.0 Clio 200 against the current crop of hot hatches would be the comparison I'd like to see.
Winner. End of comments.

Have to agree the Corsa is a real fun drive and I did the track day with VX at Oulton like many others, by far to most fun of what was available to drive IMHO but we all like different things so each to their own.

I love the Vauxhall VXR range, bit like Marmite as they say.

With you there - I'd like to try the Fiesta ST as they seem to be about the same money* as the N'ring Corsa ( *unless anywhere is doing big discounts on them at present )

Having driven a standard Corsa VXR a couple of years back round Thruxton it was a fantastic drive and I rated it more so then the Astra! If I had the space I'd perhaps look into one as a second car, fantastic how cheap they are now smile Anyone going to the morning session next Thursday for a drive of the range?
I agree, did the VXR day at Snetterton and the standard Corsa VXR felt much better on track than the Astra. Both felt like blunt instruments next to a Clio or old school Pug though.

Yup, sorry Laurasotherhalf, but that photo does rather illustrate how the Renault outclasses the Mini in the looks department :-)

Both great cars though. Would be interesting to know how the VXR (subject of this post) would stack up against them. Owning the SpecB version of the Subary Legacy, I know how much difference decent suspension can make.

Cheers,

Jerry

Can't say for the GP, but the VXR wouldn't see where the R26.R went. I tried following a .R in a Clio 200 and it just disappeared. Tyres, diff and being harnessed into those sabelt buckets gave amazing confidence in the corners

I always wonder who buys cars like this.

Surely the younger buyer who is attracted to mini hot hatches, cannot afford the insurance; whilst the older buyer who can insure them, would be embarrassed to be seen in one.
You do have a point but these are around group 14 which in ni is affordable if your are 22 ish, insurance wise!

This is why I haven't bought a 208 GTI. It's over £20k with the options I'd want (not that many). It's just not a competitive price.

Yes, VXR 20 seconds slower on the Ring lap than the R26R. Presume the VXR was on its standard tyres?

yes the .R is a wonderful looking car, i miss my old one a great deal;

however, with regards to performance, the mini GP is quicker around the nurburgring than the megane. i think my mate & i are pretty evenly matched (we've both done many 100's of laps there) & the mini could leave the meg quite easily.

i put it down to the gearing as the GP feels like it has 6 proper forward ratios where the meg feels like 6th is an overdrive & the car won't pull any more than 140mph whereas the GP blasts past 150mph.

two corners in particular seem to suit the meg better with it's proper diff however, the GP does with a electronic torque vectoring system.

Drive the Deal are quoting a brand new Fiesta ST for £14525 including a year's tax (although that is without any options).

That would be my choice.

I would argue they are both equally embarrassing for a more mature driver...say, over 25.
And a mustang with chrome wheels is not... wink

At nearly £18k this car is far too expensive still when a fiesta ST can be had with a mountune kit brand new for the same money

It's a fine line, I'll grant you - which is why it doesn't have stripes like the Mustang herd... wink

Like most here, I reserve the right to change my views to suit myself. rofl
