A car that is in that transition period from dire untrendiness to becoming retro cool. Certainly it appears to be ageing better now than it did 5 years ago!

Well it was this time last week in the blazing sun i was surrounded by Calibras at the Vauxhall Billing show!

I was down on the Astra Mk2 stand.
Ahhh, I was there too!

Some of the Calibras are a bit questionable... 18" chrome wheels and LED lights don't really do them any justice. A few nice examples kicking about though - a nice red SE9 with black alloys and there was a totally standard, unmolested white Turbo parked over by the main arena.

I still think the original Calibra is one of the prettiest mass produced cars of its era.
Agreed - I had two, both 4x4 Turbos. Brilliant cars for doing long motorway miles ( 6spd 'box made for relaxed cruising and good economy - rare in those days ) but not so good in the really twisty bits ( though I may have been spoilt on the handling side by having a Mk1 MR2 at the same time smile )

My Dad has one of the first Calibra's in Aberdeen and it was a real head turner. As a 5 year old it was cool to be seen in. Always in the garage though with problems and the bottom end was apparently going at just 30k. Parents still had it around 4 years then bought an E36 320 saloon

Chris Goffey may have been boring but his son Danny has a demonstrable air of cool about him as former drummer for Supergrass and later Babyshambles.... there was some hidden excitement in those genes (or chinos)!
I never knew that!
My parents have still got a Blue 8v SE6 Calibra, still going strong

Should have been rwd. People would be falling over themselves for them now.

Wouldn't have been too hard either, they'd already developed a 4x4 shell and had plenty RWD bits from the likes of the Mantas, Carltons and Senators or even just use the 4x4 rear end all be it with a better diff. Biggest issue would have been the engine layout, basically it would have had to be turned 90deg but given numerous people have done such conversions in sheds over the years, Vauxhall maybe missed a trick. Then again, they did trial a RWD Cavalier for the BTCC in 89/90 and binned it as it lost too much power through the transmission.

Shame, it could have been a smaller version of what we know as the Monaro.

I had a 16v back in the day. I loved it. It did chew a gearbox though.

Fantastic, a proper review from when Top Gear was about cars and not 'my toys are better than yours' challenges.

AFAIK he was talking rubbish with the grill opening. I think the front bumpers are the same on all Calibra's (bar the optional headlight washers). The difference in CD was more to do with the 8v cars running narrower wheels than those on the bigger engine cars.
The upper grille was blanked on the 8v, the 16v required more cooling.

Superb looking car in its day and it has aged well. Early red top 16v's were the sweet spot of the range.

I remember seeing one in a showroom - it was a turbo (metallic purple with cream leather) and it had the reiger wide body conversion on it. I got chatting to the salesman and he was telling me that they had just sold it.. apparently the guy had remortgaged his house to buy it!!.. not sure i'd spend £25k on a Calibra! and I definitely wouldn't remortgage my house to buy a car either!! LOL! - look a bit like this one (but purple)

I used to valet cars for a Vauxhall dealership. I could not believe my luck when the first Calibra arrived in the dealership. I think it was the easiest car I ever cleaned - Nice and low, long swoopy lines, very little plastic and fiddly bits. Just great. Took about half the time to do one compared to even the Vectra.

fking piece of st though.

Lovely looking cars in their day. The 2.5 V6 was probably the engine that suited the character of the car best, but the turbo could certainly cover ground pretty quickly. Full leather lifted an otherwise very dull interior.
