There's a PHer who has got one, I assume he still has, that only had about 500 miles on it.

It never ceases to amaze me that people actually buy cars and don't drive them. Why buy a car and not enjoy it?! I really don't get it. Someone please help me understand this.

Wonderful - like so many French sportscars!

In this case killed stone dead for UK by launch of lighter, nimbler Elise.

I think it was really killed off by bad marketing and Renault's disinterest in the British market.

There are only Forty Nine actual right hand drive versions more were made but didn't sell and as it was sought after on the continent they were shipped back and converted to Left Hand Drive. The Lotus had nothing to do with lack of sales it was the impracticality of the car coupled with a too high price tag.The 500 mile version I know of that was sold recently for £27,995 could not be driven as it was subject to asset freeze by the Courts and was kept in storage for a long time,Nowadays I think they would have crushed it!!! As to the Engine I don't think there was any difference between race and road versions all used the engine from the Clio Williams of which became the later development for the Megane I own a four thousand mile version which I have had for Fourteen years this year, which like many other owners I am sure remains, in my modest collection of cars all of which I drive on different occassions weather permitting ETC..

We have 62 RHD cars known to the club (RAOC) at the moment. And yes the unsold cars were converted to LHD painted silver and sold mostly in Germany.

There are one or two RHD silver cars which must have been part way through this process and then ordered back into the UK. You can tell them firstly because they are silver and secondly because they have the tyre pressure information sticker on the wrong side of the car.

The engines are different versions of the F7R as previously stated. Megane version in road car. Clio version in race car. Main differences in the head design.

I remember when I was growing up, a guy from Gleneagles had one of these, we would drive past his house a lot when going to visit my gran. Back then I used to think it was amazing!

He also previously owned a Plymouth Prowler with matching trailer, and a BMW Z8. He seemed to be into his rare metal!

I've always loved these. Saw one last week being used in the Tour De France caravan. Couldn't help feeling very sorry for it...

I agree with some of the things said here, especially the lack of success given the arrival of the Elise.
But, and its a big but, imagine getting a race Spider, so you got the benefits of the better engine with extra power, penske dampers, sadev sequential gearbox, and no windscreen, but with the safety benefits of the full cage, and making it road legal!
Thats what we did, and at the time I believe it was the only road legal, road registered Renault Spider Race Car in the country! Superb!

Hi Liem, no worries, its hard to get firm figures!

Think we peaked at around 76 over here.

Some say we started with 100 but I've seen a UK production breakdown of 63 yellow, 41 blue, 13 red and 6 silver totalling 123. But no way of knowing if they were all RHD or if any supplied to other markets were RHD either. We know at at least some cars were supplied in RHD to the UK as personal imports from other countries.

I guess we'll never know for sure, but as you say a very low figure compared to most other cars.

Just nice to see them out and about!
