Funnily enough "boring" was an accusation levelled at the 335i when it was introduced too. They didn't sell in big numbers compared to 320d's etc, but they definitely have a following.
Maybe *I* am boring, but I have always liked sleeper road cars like the 335i and the 435i too. I don't have a problem with the looks either, I think the 435i with some M Sport bits will look cool.
Agree with this. Maybe I'm getting old but a subtle, capable sleek coupe without any jazzy stuff appeals greatly to me. What is BMW doing with the DCT box then?
Is it purely for the M1/2/3/4/5/6?
Wonder why it bothered with a DCT when the ZF8 appears to have all bases covered.
I have always wondered why bmw bothered with an auto at all when a manual does everything but with more added involvement & enjoyment, if its got an auto/twin clutch it isn't a drivers car it's just a fantastic marketing tool to make plenty more money, bmw are the daddy's at squeezing money out of new technology. Is it purely for the M1/2/3/4/5/6?

They could have least made an effort to give it a decent make over. Changing it from 3 series to 4 series doesn't change the fact its one ugly mother car, right up there with the Porsche Cayenne. When are BMW going to get back on track with their styling. Kia have a better looking range of cars, hell even Peugeot are not as bad looking as a BMW.

I don't have an issue with the whole 4series labelling, but M4, that's a motorway or at best a piece of ironmongery from a DIY shop.
Come on BMW, it's an M3 born from racing heritage, think I'd be finding a number 3 and some double sided sticky tape for mine.
Er... The M3 is a motorway too!Come on BMW, it's an M3 born from racing heritage, think I'd be finding a number 3 and some double sided sticky tape for mine.
I wonder what they'll call it in China though. The number 4 is considered unlucky there I believe.

Where there are some cracking driving roads... And comes to a sickening halt in Wales...
The M3 goes North.
Why the fuss about the name? How is a 435i for example any more daft sounding than 335i?
Why does an M4 sound stupid because it sounds like a motorway, yet M3, M5 and M6 don't sound stupid?
Can someone please answer as I'm genuinely confused why the big fuss with the number 4, yet there's never been concern over any number before all the way to 8.....
Bit strange.
I'm sure it's a lovely car and I'm sure that if I drove it I wouldn't find it boring. My daily drives have less than 200bhp - 300+ would seem very fast to me.
However, it's looks do nothing for me. When the e46 coupe came out I thought it was a great looking car and I wanted one (and bought one). The e90 series less so and these F whatever they are models even less so.
A mate has a new 3 series, it's a boggo company car, Efficient Dynamics model. Depressingly dull inside and out.
I think Mercedes have got a real opportunity with the upcoming W205 C-class group of cars to knock the socks off these for desirability.

Also, its very clever that BMW have used the 4 series moniker.
What this means is that they can still sell the 3 series coupe as a stand alone product (even if they decide to stop producing more). Two outcomes arise from this:
1) people won't feel like they're getting last year's product (i.e. the "previous" 3 series)
2) there is no "forced depreciation" of the old model; so it therefore keeps the market value high.
The result is that current 3 series owners don't get upset (good for fan-base morale if anything?) whilst BMW and car dealers across the world can sell a current 3 series coupe as a stand-alone niche car (not last year's model) without too much depreciation.
I think the market already has depreciated the E90 3 series coupe/convertible though. A couple of weeks ago my local BMW dealer was selling a 3k mile 12 plate 330d M Sport convertible for £29.5k vs £49k list (inc options). The market knows the old model is being replaced, and values/depreciates accordingly. On the 4 series, its more of the same really, and its worked well enough in the past. I don't have a problem with the "4" name....it seems P-headers don't like change.

£50k for a diesel 3-series which hasn't even got even the top engine? That's got to be a seriously heavily specced car! I'm surprised it's even worth 30k now, to be honest.
Name doesn't bother me.. don't see why it bothers everyone so much? We've already got a 6 series and had an 8 series? Audi went from even numbers to having odd numbers like A5, A7 etc?
If theres anything that bothers me its the horrible looks! The E36 coupe was a brute, the E46 coupe was handsome and muscular, the E92 was one of the best looking 3's... However, this 4 series just looks plain wrong? Out of proportion, too many bulges/creases etc. Maybe the looks will grow on me.. I hated the E60's looks when it first came out but now own one! (though I do concede the E39 was the most beautiful 5 made, imo)

........and the RWD not brilliant in the snow, obviously!.........
Same old chestnut! They're perfectly drivable in the snow if you have the right tyres fitted for the conditions!
See the pic of my F30 320d in my profile garage. That was taken after driving 20 miles in those conditions. Absolutely drama-free, the odd deliberately induced bit of walking-pace power oversteer aside .
Use the right DSC setting, exercise a bit of throttle control, and they are perfectly capable.
I like it [/biased fanboi].
Not a fan of those sport badges on the side. Total afterthought and look really cheap.
Think it'll look even better with the M-Tech kit. Interesting that a proper LSD is available as a BMW Performance upgrade for this (whereas it isn't for the M135i).
Tbh, I think this'll be the basis for an epic M34.
