This was the video that kicked off my love of the E39.

This video is fab. Watched it many times... The bit when he drifts around the corner and lets the wheel go to correct the drift is legendary.

Such a Q-car. (although I am biased)

Madonna couldn't even play herself very well. Terrible actress.

I love how subtle and non-showy the E39 M5 is! The "talk softly but carry a big stick" approach, now somewhat lost in modern performance car design...........
agreed, but others cars still do it - one of the reasons I bought my B7 RS4

Aaaahhhh... 2001. When Madge was fit and BMWs had manual 'boxes. Halogen days... halogen days indeed.

I bought a copy of the DVD with Series 1 & 2 when it came out in the US in 2004, top notch collection of mini movies made by great directors with a-list stars, personal favourites are Hostage and Beat the Devil (Gary Oldman is great as the Devil and a superb cameo from Marilyn Manson). Pity no-one else has done something similar.

The first one, "Ambush" directed by John Frankenheimer (who of course directed Ronin) is my fave.

Yep, the absence of Madge and a 7 makes it better smile

Ok, question: Why do i "want" an E39 M5 much, much more than i "want" an E60 one??

(maybe because the E60 just feels like a bit too much of a tech fest, whereas the E39 is perhaps the finest exponent of that classic recipe of a fairly simple but big engine in a reasonable sized car sending power backwards to a locking diff)

I hate to spoil the fun, but the BMW in the picture; Is it an M5? Can't be surely? Where are the quadruple exhausts..?

So can I assume PistonHeads was reading Jalopnik yesterday? Or is it a pure coincidence that they just happen to have had this video on their homepage yesterday?

Not much driving in it, but this one (Beat The Devil) is just mad.

Lots of 'the gears at the bottom of the gate make the car go muchos forwards" there then...

As a freshly-licensed 17 year old when this came out, I remember putting a lot of thought into working out exactly how to execute a perfect handbrake turn and open the rear door simultaneously... happy days!
