I was on my way home from work this afternoon and noticed a Porsche behaving very strangely. When passing it was shocking to see that driver was taking a swig from a bottle of Whisky, could have been brandy.

We were in roadworks so everyone was going 50, so spent a good couple of miles along side as I did not believe what I had seen. The car was however driving very badly, with little lane control, much accelerating and sudden braking. The car was also obviously in the wrong gear!

So, I spend some time deciding what to do:- call the police or not.

As I came to my junction I undertook, and to my horror there was a small child in the car. The bottle was between the mans legs.

I stopped and called the police.

They have just called. A statement is needed as they stopped the car and he was drunk as a skunk, and is now in custody. No idea where the child is but at least is safe.

I must say I feel terrible as my call has ruined his day, but not others, and perhaps he will receive some needed treatment.

Just want to let off some steam.....

Seems completely OK to me. The blame lies in the driver who was drunk, and obviously in a mental state that requires the use of alcohol. Let's hope he gets some help for that particular problem. In the meanwhile I'll keep an eye out for an Ebay Porsche.
You did good.

You did the right thing reporting them, imagine if you hadn't and something had happened.

Doesn't bear thinking about.

Your call may have saved his life. As for ruining his day, fk him.

your conscience shouldn't be remotely troubled. Anyone doing something as reckless as that is a rampaging alcoholic who is a severe danger to themselves and others.

Somehow I suspect something else had already ruined his day. Or worse.

Still, you did the right thing getting him off the road.

I say well done for acting like you have. Hopefully a lesson learned on his part (I would like to think any way!) and as for behaving like that with kids on board - throw the book at him!

Yep, you very much did the right thing. Just for the sake of the child in the car, that driver should not be behind the wheel of a car for a long time.

Ruining his day should be the last of your worries. You deserve a pat on the back for doing the right thing, imagine if he'd decided, in his drunken state, to give it some welly and lost control?.

Well done thumbup

Well done. I told my mate I'd 100% report him for drink driving if he got in the car. He thanked me later. There's no excuse, ever.

clap Well done to the OP. Why worry about ruining his day though? He could've quite easily have ruined alot of lives though his drunk driving.

Imagine how bad you would have felt if you saw his car wrapped round a tree on the news later to find out both occupants were dead. Or even worse others had been killed.

You did the right thing, well done.

This is pure speculation.

Blokes wife tells him she wants a divorce.

Gets into car, takes child. Drinks.

If he is any kind of parent he will look back and be thankful the police stopped him before it was too late.

That was my final thought before I called. I suspect that if there had been no child I would have looked the other way.

Thanks for the comments, the post was not for praise. My decision has been playing on my mind for some hours. I know I made the right decision but........

However I can sleep knowing that tomorrows news will not include a suicide with child, or a terrible accident.

And as i said, he clearly needs help so hopefully he will now get it

You did the right thing - on a normal road I may have tried to convince him to pull over and try to find out what was wrong, but on a busy motorway calling the police was definitely the best course of action.
