That is good value in comparison. Didn't think they were an M6 however and the technical detail on this says 210bhp?

Looks great though.
It also says 34lbft of torque, sure looks like an M88 under there though.

Doesn't seem too mad given the condition it's in. Looks to have had a full engine loom done recently too, very neat and shiny.
I feel there's more than an element of bandwagoneering going on following the ridiculous rise of the E30 M3 in recent years.

If people are queuing up to buy one then fair enough. I may well be out of touch. Nevertheless, I think it's a ludicrous price.
Compared to what?

Decent E24s have been going up in value for some time now.

I'd say it's already a classic and values are only likely to go one way.

You either get classic cars or you don't.

Am I being naive by thinking that spending just a couple of thousand on a tired, non-M, version of these 6 series would achieve even a modicum of the experience gained from a £20k+ M635CSI ?

I nearly bought a shell of one of these for peanuts. I even had a 535 to donate parts.

So much regret.

I love the M635CSi.
This is a proper BMW
Rear wheel drive .... Check
Naturally aspirated straight six .... Check
Limited Slip Differential .... Check
Manual .... Check
With plenty of modern creature comforts we now take for granted and that 1980s über cool rareity factor. Yes please :-)

I'd avoid anything for a couple of grand.

Both the M635 and the 635 tend to fall into two catagories, tired and too expensive to put right or decent clean cared for cars. The price difference between the two can be big.
The biggest issue is rust. Once it takes hold these cars are essentially scrap as it simply costs too much gto fix.
For a 635 CSI anything for a couple of grand is likely to fall into the first catagory. Good cars start at closer to the 5k mark. Minters can go for 10k.

With the M635 it's the same just more expensive.

The auto 635csi is a different kind of car to an M635csi. A Manual 635 might be more like it but they afre hard to find.

Ah, the explanation went in the subbed story! What I meant was that it doesn't have a *modern* sports steering wheel, many of which are too thick to hold properly and actually detach you further from the road. Hope this makes sense!

The M88/S38 M635 and the M30 635 engines are chalk and cheese different with an autobox in the latter accentuating the difference still further. The M1's M88 through to the E34's S38B38 are very rev hungry with all the M30's being almost the opposite with bundles of low-down torque and little to be gained at the higher end of the rev range.

It makes all the difference when driving the cars and a 635CSi won't come very close to the M635 driving experience.

They all look great though, as long as the rust hasn't taken too much of a hold.

Edit. Check timing chain history on M635's and camshaft oil banjo bolts on the 635's.

It doesn't have to be compared to anything to believe it's ludicrously priced.

I don't doubt it will become a classic in it's own right. However, there's still too many of them around at the moment to justify that sort of pricetag.

The price would be somewhere warranted if it had covered ~20,000 miles, maybe. Nearly 80,000?

First on the list when my numbers come up... absolutely love them.

How good/awful are the auto boxes on these? as a lot in the classifieds are autos and it might be good as a wafter/cross european tourer. Are they particularly leggy/jerky? or nice and smooth?

Definitely one for the big garage when the lottery comes up. 80s white please. It'll look perfect next to the contemporary Ur-Quattro. BMW has made some impressive machinery since, but to me they hit a peak with the M635CSi which has never been equalled.

Previous Pic of the Week here, owned by at least two PHers. Wrong wheels though, the ones on the OP here are absolutely, totally and utterly perfect.
