Probably an apocryphal story.
In the day McLaren sent service crews out to service the F1's.
They returned one of their German customer's cars back to the factory with a "computer fault".
Said computer was showing the car regularly maxed out (c.231mph IIRC).
After much investigation they couldn't pin down the cause.
They contacted the owner who replied - of course it had - that's why he bought the car, for his commute between Frankfurt and Bonn!
Only 166????
Cheers, Pewe.

NGK210 vv - so my source was correct. Not only banker and racer but sometime head of Bugatti no less.

Uh Oh. An Autobahn story.

Que a ton of chinny reckon tales about doing a 150mph and a train of AMG/M/RS/911/exotica/whatever steaming past like you were stood still.

Also the inevitable catching and overtaking a line of expensive German bahnstormers hard up to their 155mph limiters, and you sailing past at 157 mph in your much less fancy unrestricted car that you've "possibly" managed to wind up to that. You waving, looks on their faces etc etc. Like you can actually discern the look on someones face when driving at that speed.

Come on, who's gonna be the first?
Not me - been over there several times, and a place where my friends family live is right on a very quiet stretch of unrestricted autobahn - got up to about 130MPH and wimped out going any quicker!

Go on then, I'll bite. I've seen an indicated 175mph but not on this stretch of Autobahn. When living in Austria I would commute back to Blightly twice a year. Not always in my own car, hence the 175mph. It certainly feels quick, but traffic and weather conditions were good so I went for it. It was fun!

I have Goodyear Eagles F1 2's all round in good condition. Is it safe to do top speed for an extended period of time? (conditions right).

Would the tires be the limiting factor? Assuming the engine and drivetrain are also serviceable?
IIRC the test requires the tyre be run at the rated speed for 10 minutes. Usually tyres are very over engineered.

In short, car dependant, I'd expect fuel / road / traffic to be an issue before I properly made and looked after W/Y/Z rated tyre failed.

I guess it's just me then that finds it a poor show that PH has lowered itself to playing adverts, and make no mistake that's what it is.

No, me too. But then it's not really tyre test is it, any suitably rated tyre will survive a simple short run on an autobahn like that. In the dry, in a straight line, even at speed, most tyres will be good. It's on a wet A road in October with a few leaves and 9C or on a very hot day when you're pushing hard in the Alps that a good road tyre will show that it's good. I've seen 176 appear on my speedo but in a straight line and in the dry . . . so no problem.

If I was doing those speeds on a regular basis I'd fit Michelin or Continental, based on my experience and their reputations.

Limiting factor would be the size of your fuel tank and wallet. If I remember correctly the original RS4 would go from full to empty in about 18 minutes at full tilt.
The tires provided they are rated for the speed and load would present no problems.

Just as he's about to go for v-max, Sutcliffe says: "We've just bolted-on a brand new set of Dunlop SP Sport..."

I thought you should run-in new tyres, for approx 150 miles, before 'pushing' them - guess that's no longer the case with new Dunlops, then?
confused

While I expect there was some distance in the edit of the film, every tyre test I've ever been part of we've had the "running in" period as the distance from the garage to the track, so usually the length of pit exit, before the get serious abuse (in the name of testing, of course).

To be fair, you bring the car and the tyres up to temperature with a lap or two off pace, so they get a few miles wink

"The owner" is Thomas Bscher, a banker - ie, he owns a bank - and racer. IIRC, it was Bscher who suggested to Ron Dennis that the F1 might do well at Le Mans...

My last autobahn speed story revolves around a 1.6l 1997 Skoda Felicia on a charity rally. My passenger was alseep after the excitement of the Nordschleife and I was curious to see what it could do (1.6l Felicias were 1.3l cars with an old Golf engine and no upgrades to brakes or suspension evident).

I was definitely the fastest vehicle on the road that morning and I achieved a steady GPS confirmed 111mph which is 5mph over their claimed top speed, even though I was quite heavily laden.

I have just driven from Dusseldorf to Munich, and my speed limiter kicked in about 130 mph.

The bloody wife.
I think to be fair that was fast enough, I never quite trust them in the middle lane to stay there.

You are betting a LOT on the skill of those middle lane drivers. Which doesn't sit well from a UK perspective!

Nope. Not credible.

RS4 is an Audi, so it will be limited to 155 mph.

Full tank of some 15 gallons or so in *47* miles ?

My BMW 325 Touring will drain its tank in about 2.5-2.7 hours
at Vmax, far more credible.

If you have your foot in it they go faster than the '155 limiter' as a safety feature in case you are overtaking. Something you should try next time you drive one.

Maybe BMW's you have to tap your heels against the body to get it to go faster?

These adverts crudely disguised as videos of interest to petrolheads really are st.
