I like them but the rear legroom is a non starter for my 2 lads so I'd go for a last of the line 6-cylinder 125i on the 205s and save up for a Drexler and airbox/backbox - similar performance but a bit more interior space

One would have to fish around foreign classifieds to get a picture, but in places like:

- Parts of Europe - Scandis, Holland, Belgium, Italy, I think there are big import/luxury/emissions taxes as well as lower overall depreciation (vs UK) that keeps stuff like Caymans more expensive. Plus, lower volumes sold in those countries which keep value up. Or if they're not expensive to buy, they're far more expensive to run (e.g. car tax).

- US/Japan - the GT86 is insanely cheap. Australia too.

- Everywhere else - Porsches are rare, expensive cars.

We've got speed limits, a few rogue police, narrow roads etc; IMO GT86 is the perfect driver's car for here. Its the most fun road car I've ever had. Ringing the car out on a nice road is a joy because it's so easy to place, you can feel all four corners of the car easily, this makes roundabouts and corners a joy. Put the seat in the lowest position and slightly back and you can still see the whole bonnet, the tires make a lovely screeching sound on a hot day, the gearbox is lovely and heel n toe is simple. In contrast I borrowed a 125i convertible a few months ago and what a dull car that was. The driving position particularly the pedal position was terrible. Mostly I hated driving it around because I couldn't perceive where the bonnet ended at the front and how much car there was behind me.

And I don't get the comparison with porsche, they cost twice as much to run; my insurance quote for a boxster was £1057, the gt86 is £274.

Still cannot believe the 0-60 time. Maybe I am missing the point of these but is there a limit at how slow a "sports car" can be off the mark? I do like these and would love to own one however I think it could do with 50-100 bhp more so don't think I'm bashing it.

When does anyone do a 0-60 sprint as quickly as they can on the road? How relevant is it to how enjoyable the car is?

I see you have a Clio 197. I used to have a Civic Type-R, so similar performance to your Renault. My wife bought an MX-5, and it was the realisation that the much slower rear drive sports car was more fun to drive than the 200bhp hatch that killed hot hatches for me. That MX-5 was slower than a GT86. If you spent some time with a GT86, you might come to the same conclusion. Or you might not, yet, or ever. Just depends what floats your boat, hot hatches stopped doing that for me.

All I can say is that I'm smiling after a visit to a small dealer who offered to compete against the big dealer I visited last week. Red, manual, alcantara with sat nav might be with me in 10 days. I gave up bargaining after he beat the competing deal by a healthy difference. Everyone has to eat and I got by reasonably close to my ridiculously 0 margin offer. Regarding depreciation.... You buy new, you lose big bucks...that's how it works...that is a given in any consumer good you buy.

Fun is where you find it a lot of the time. I sometimes get as much fun out of absolutely spanking the nuts off the Swift as I do driving the Sagaris.

Thanks for sharing, was a great unbiased review IMO. Does make you wonder if you should buy a used GT86/BRZ for £20k, or save £10k and buy a late S2000! In terms of which of the blood brothers I'd go for, It'd have to be the BRZ for me, in my eyes, its the better looking of the 2, looks less fussy, and its the more exclusive car.

I've come from an EP3 Civic type r to a gt86 and I have to say the difference in performance is unnoticeable. The cars behave totally differently, though. Whereas the civic feels like a hooligan's car, the gt86 somehow feels more mature, yet more sporty and juvenile at the same time..

But anyway, I chose the toyota because I like the nose and the front headlights. The Subaru blue is really nice, though and their everything taken care of package is compelling, too.

Appreciate where your coming from, I haven't driven one so can't comment.

I can understand completely how it's better from a handling point of view and that's where the fun is rather than straight line speed.

Suppose it's one of those "all about the experience"

83000 cars sold globally and 2700 in the UK in 12-18 months. Not bad at all.

Thank the God of Motoring for these companies having the balls to provide a new generation of cheap RWD sports car that is ripe for enjoying as is or modifying. thumbup
This.
Great to see major global car firms making PH friendly cars. All for £25! new. thumbup

A flick through the classifieds will show, these will soon be well within the target demographic reach though. They are being hammered in the trade.

7 month old well specced '86s (£28k new) with less than 5k on the clock are struggling to fetch £18k-19k.
*cough* Struggling? There is the odd exception but in general they're not doing quite that badly. I suspect there will be relatively few available as many have been bought on finance which locks the buyer in for probably three years. Clearly, once that three years is up there will be a mini-deluge of the darn things and prices will plummet. Probably. wink

Both the Toyota and Subaru are nice moters, but imo until they come down more in price i would be putting my money into a well looked after Integra R...

I'd say dropping ~£8k in a year (almost 30%) is already epically bad depreciation. Based on new car registration data, UK sales have so far been poor, especially for a car that received such a pronounced level of hype and media publicity.
