I'm losing my company car in 2 weeks from today due to my employment situation changing.

I'll need a new car.

Budget is 1-2k, emphasis on buying as follows:

Needs to be super reliable

Super economical

Able to tow a light trailer 80-90BHP would be fine

Emphasis on overall running costs being kept low.

I'm ok with a spanner so will service it/repair it myseslf, so something easier to work on is a bonus.

I'd like an estate really but not if it will screw the economy over too much and increase taxation.

Would consider an estate, or Ibiza/Golf/Skoda equivalent?

Maybe a stroen?

Ideas please guys, need to buy something this week or next.

Up to £2k doesn't give you a huge amount of choice. Think the above mentioned D5 would be out of budget for all but the ropiest examples.

I'd be looking at the 1.9TDi Octavia or a 1.8TDCi Focus Estate. Mondeo is also in budget if you need the extra space.

Plenty of them around, so if you need to buy one quick you shouldn't have too much trouble finding one.

Edit: I'm trying to think of smaller estates in budget- Polo? But it's uglier than Janet Street Porter.
Volvo V40 perhaps, though i'm not familiar with the diesel engine in that.

i have just bought a mondeo tdci estate - 131miles but seems tight as a drum - 54mph on a mixed drive and within your budget - certainly gets the thumbs up from me

Something like this should fit the bill and come within budget?

Saw a 2002 Mondeo estate for £400 on eBay the other day, had done 190k or something like that but had plenty of service history - so I'd look for something like that.

Just bought a 99 Skoda Felicia 1.9D for £350...

Most of the car buying public want a super reliable, super economical sensible car for no money. For this reason, they really hold their price!

You won't get much of a V70 D5 for that money, but you might get an older V70 2.5D (although most of them have 250k on the clock by now).

Mondeo TDCi's in this range tend to be disasters.

Volvo V40 1.9d is a good shout, as is Rover 75 CDT (although a nice one of those is usually out of your budget). There are various options using the VAG 1.9 PD engine (e.g. Octavia Estate) but, again, expect a lot of miles so be realistic you will have to spend on it at some point.

If you can reduce your economy demands a bit there are loads of decent petrols out there. A 1.8 petrol Mondeo is generally a much better buy (and overall cheaper to run) than a TDCi for the same money for example.
