Re 275bhp+ going to the rear wheels rather than all four, I would imagine that the chassis & electronics can more than handle that sort of increase without turning the car nice blue coffin. I guess the question is whether the standard prius tyres could cope?
With a turbo it's the way in which the power is delivered that's the problem. Sure, if is a small unit with no lag and a low boost threshold then it wont be such a problem. But the tuners will no doubt stick massive blowers in these (like they do with the Impreza) and at that point it'll be useless...

IMHO, I can't see this really taking off. The worlds moved on and we just happen to be a few die hard petrol heads who hanker after something that vaguely resembles something that was once great...

Re "no turbo lag" i wasn't suggesting turbo in the first place, and afaik toyobaru don't have a variable vane super smooth progressive twin turbo unit like BMW or VAG in their dev toolbox (off the top of my head, plz correct if wrong).

Er.... this is already old news. It's just a cosmetic, brake and suspension kit under the Tuned By STI banner. It's not a new model and there won't be a turbo version. Here's a quote from the head of STI:

""STI is working on finalizing creation of the special version of BRZ, which would be unveiled in "some time" (secret). Turbocharger is NOT in the concept of this greatly balanced FR sports car, so we would concentrate our developments on suspension, handling, performance improvements and sports styling. The turbocharged version of BRZ will remain only in GT300 Championship."
-Hiroyuki Karamatsu, President of Subaru Tecnica International Inc. (STI)

Yup, pretty much every site I've seen this on has said it's just a few bits and bobs and definitely NO TURBO. Deliberately misleading article that would have probably resulted in a ten page forum discussion about something that's not going to happen.

Turbo lag?

What decade is this?

Modern turbos barely have any. Surprised this was mentioned on PH.
name a few small(ish) displacement engined cars that don't suffer turbo lag ??

All very lovely but I'd be surprised if Subaru balance the books on sales with their current line of thinking.

Oh ffs. If I get suckered by another "hot gt86/BRZ" story that turns out to feature not one bhp more, I'll end it all, I swear.

The BRZ doesn't need forced induction, it just needs to breathe a little better at the top end. Currently it feels strained. A good old-fashioned exhaust and remap with maybe a change of camshafts should do it.

Obviously these things are completely personal, but to my ear the engine in the turbocharged Impreza is just about the worst sounding car engine ever produced. It's the only car I can think of that I would completely discount purely on the basis of the noise it makes.
Cannot even begin to comprehend this. A nice characterful flat 4 is one of the nicest sounding (relatively ordinary) things on our roads.

Engine sound is an entirely personal thing, there's nothing objective about it.

FWIW, the tone is nothing directly to do with it being a flat four. You could give an inline four the same exhaust sound if you got the header lengths right for it. The only reason Boxer fours tend to sound like that is that it's the easiest way to build the exhaust system for that cylinder layout.

Kambites makes some very interesting points, but they are almost always diametrically opposed to the majority view.

Give me a minute and I'll think of something about cars that most people agree on and put it to him, see if my theory holds.

No offence intended Kambites, you come across as a thoughtful and knowledgeable poster

hehe That's never a conscious intention, but it does appear to often turn out that way. smile

ETA: In this case, I suspect my aversion to the noise comes from the fact that so many Imprezas have had stupidly loud, basey exhausts fitted. I think that subconscious association has made me hate the noise of even properly silenced unequal length headers of that type.

I think it's a combination of mild turbo lag and soft throttle response.

Some manufacturers deliberately put in a non-linear pedal map to give you a whoosh of torque for 'performance feel'. The engine would feel more responsive with a linear map, but you wouldn't get that sensation of being thrust back in your seat. There may also be some fueling limits put in for emissions purposes and things like that.

The proper scary turbo surge of cars like the 930 might be a thing of the past, but whatever the cause I've still not driven a turbo engine that feels as alert on-boost as a good naturally aspirated unit.

litchfield quote 25bhp gains from remap and exhaust for ~£1500 and are planning their own supercharger kit, easiest option would be new forester turbo engine as is brz engine with turbo on
best option would be to liase with andy forest/jolly green monster to produce svx 6 cylinder boxers with twin turbos mmmmmm 8.38 1/4 mile!

I like the sound of Challenger main battle tanks at full pelt on Dartmoor. But if even 1 drove past my house everyday id soon get pissed off with the sound. Its about context. If all scoobies. didnt sound so "look at me I got no attention as a child" then maybe everyone would like them. Personally I like the sound... but not at 4am. Lol
