Two things struck me about this report. One was how much these cars cost. The second was CH`s comment that he keeps the Mercedes he is driving all year in comfort mode all the time. The other bells and whistles hardly get a look in. Are road cars in this price category kitted out with too much technology that does not get used?
Its because these cars are mainly purchased with company money and not personal money. Same for the M5. It does not matter about the length of the options list, all boxes will be ticked because of the way they are acquired.

Even the rich Audi consigliere will probably use some sort of 'tax efficient' approach to acquiring a £100k car with £40k worth of options on it.

Senior management generally cannot buy a Ferrari/Porsche with company money, they buy these types of cars.

I was walking in London the other day and I overtook a Ferrari 458. I have no idea why anyone would spend close to £200k on a car when I can walk faster.
It's quite possible that this Ferrari sometimes drives places where it can go a bit faster. What do you think?
It's also feasible the concept of irony has evaded you in this instance.

Because its bloody good fun. My track car wasn't ready for a recent Combe day I had booked, so what do you do?
Break out the E63. I can also take the dog for a walk, get our bikes in the boot and should I want to overtake you bimbling along an A road, I've got that covered too. I also derive great pleasure from the noise it makes.
Good God man, even my wife enjoys giving it the beans every now and then.
Overtake me if you want to in your fat Merc, but look in your rear-view mirror, and I’d be the one grinning happily in the Alfa ;-)

Could you possibly make a video that doesn't include a German car?

That would be nice, thanks!
Racism is so rife around here isn't it! smile
The germans are not a race, they never have been and never will be.
My racist detector worked - only a racist makes the "xxx is not a race" argument - I win...

The front view of that Audi is fantastic but charging people for the Quattro thing is wrong - charge people to REMOVE IT, exploit their bad taste smile

The prices of the cars are just stupid tho - 3 years time you'll get one of these for £25K or less, that's a staggering rate of loss meaning they'll all be in the hands of the "It's not debt really" self-deluding leasers for a while - let's hope they look after them eh? smile
No you won't. Cheapest 3 year old RS6 is more than double that. Low 30s at 5 years old with sensible mileage.

They depreciate but not that quickly!
OK 3 years is pushing it but they'll be these inside 5 - take this, for example

5 years - £29K and I think that's probably a bit optimistic.

I've no doubt you would be, if that's your Alfa in your profile it looks gorgeous, you just came across in previous posts as if you only drive at 30 mph everywhere or are a bit narrow minded as to the possible merits of other vehicles.

But if you want one with an Audi warranty this 4 year old one will cost 40k, always a cheap car available but that doesn't make it the market.

I'd say your forecast of 30k in 3 years is way off the mark as a retail price, however a trade price might be different!

I appraciate your point and maybe I am narrow minded in the sense that I consider cars like uber powerful estates to be too compromised and I don't think you need 500 + bhp in an estate to have fun, i.e. I'd instead take your M3 any day! ;-)

Of the two I'd prefer the Mercedes. I'm not a fan of any of Audi's usual selling points, and I really don't like AWD.

Before anyone tries the practicality card I'll state that I live in Scotland and have a lot of snow driving experience. I actually really enjoy driving in the snow. I've had 2WD cars with a bit of poke for a long time and simply do not see any fundamental requirement for AWD in British depths of snow, and certainly not in the wet. The loud pedal does not need to touch the carpet all of the time, but it's nice to have an excess of power to entertain whatever the weather. If a 2 tonne barge with 2WD is too much for you to cope with if the road gets damp, then you probably just need to adjust your driving style to the conditions as they say. You can mask your incompetence and poor judgement with AWD as you're speeding up but sooner or later you're going to find that 2WD and 4WD cars have the same limitations when braking. Given that I think AWD is unnecessary, the disadvantages it brings (e.g. utterly ruining the way it feels) I'll take the AMG. Or an XFR-S.

All that said, I think estates are ugly. I'd get the saloon for daily driver / long drives to see the inlaws in SW Wales etc. I've yet to run out of space with luggage and clobber for 2 toddlers with even the modest boot sizes my current dailies have, so I don't see any benefit in buying the ugly sister just incase I need to transport a sheep in the car.
