Surely both of these have gone miles past the point where the law of diminishing returns makes them the choice of the genitally challenged or those who just buy "the most expensive" of a range without a second thought?
They're big enough to be unwieldy on UK roads, able to post great performance figures having made compromises on other areas that don't make sense to most.
It's hugely impressive that you can get a 2 tonne estate to do that - I just find it really odd that there are enough people willing to drop £60k in 3 years for the pleasure. Ah well, maybe I'm just jealous of those that can. Honestly don't know, as I have a nigh-on 2 tonne "sports" car that struggles to better 20mpg (it's old though so depreciation is less of an issue).
What's not to like about these cars? Large capable machines that can seat 5 people and carry their luggage that are beautifully finished/equipped and provide a great turn of speed? What better way to cruise the villa/ski chalet with the family, granted at 80-90k you have to be wealthy but I would if I could.
I think either would be a good partner for a sports car in a nice 2 car garage.

Good Point. CH whats your response?
Also why are we celebrating these? Like anyone is going to do a 0-60 sprint at the traffic lights in a built up area with 30 mph limits, or do a stop start on a national speed limit road. How moronic is that?
I can see the strange logic in owning a sports/supercar, its about the design of it, the sound of the engine, the lightness/agility of the car, the communication from the controls. These just seem like hugely fast barges. Where is the fun in driving these?
Seriously, these are nothing but statistics and bragging rights. We are no longer at school kids, or perhaps some of you are.

The one that wasn't in this but probably should have been is the Alpina B5 Biturbo Toruing. Same ZF 8 speed as the Audi (though Alpina reckon that it's super fast with trick cylinder deactivation on shifts), far more exclusive than either of these and my guess a bit cheaper (or spend the same and get every surface trimmed in leather). I think Alpina's more compliant suspension suits fast estate cars well.

+1 There is nothing in these cars for me. £90k+?? What a load of willywagging bks. Get an ordinary estate for £30k to do your load lugging if you wish, spend the rest on a proper sports car. Wasting all that petrol, making a racket everywhere with an engine that sounds like an old spitfire jet surrounded in absolute luxury.
Doesn't appeal to me at all .................... ??
On a more serious note, I wouldn't go for either, if I had no option and had to choose, the Audi would win, I have a Merc and know how crap they are in the snow.
These cars should be driven to the Alps in the winter and I think as much as I prefer the Merc, it would get stuck.
Give me a used G63 in mafia black instead please.

Enjoyable video. I'd take the Merc but I'm sure a C63 would suffice.
What would be interesting in these sorts of tests is watching 5 people get into the car/feedback from the rear passengers and loading them up with some luggage. The same target load could be applied to other classes (Golf 7/C63/E63/A45AMG/Cayenne...) which would make for an interesting comparison test - performance stats loaded/unloaded/with load and rear comfort feedback.. I know PH isn't WhatCar but no-one seems to do these tests and surely that's a key driver behind these models.

My thoughts exactly. B5 Touring should be in this video!Harris's enthusiasm is as infectious as ever - but I'm confused about the RS6 ride; Autocar slated the steel sprung dynamic option for being far too harsh even in comfort mode?

I agree, I've driven every current RS and every single one has had suspension so hard I don't think I could like with it.Harris's enthusiasm is as infectious as ever - but I'm confused about the RS6 ride; Autocar slated the steel sprung dynamic option for being far too harsh even in comfort mode?
If it was me I'd do what is mentioned above and opt for a C63 Coupe PP, if I had kids and stuff then maybe the Estate.
Can understand the snow point but I'm semi-rural, near some major roads and it isn't much of an issue.
