Is it just me?........ I am grumpy and having a bad day or summink or are others getting a wee bit jaded with this 'peek a boo' show and tell approach to launching the car?

Wow, it has an engine that, like, makes a noise!!!

Ooh some photos that get 'leaked' might (or might not) be the real thing.

Not having a pop at Pheads here but for fks sake Bimmer,

JUST RELEASE THE DAMN THING AND LETS BE GETTING ON WITH TRYING TO BREAK, RACE, THRASH, CRASH AND MOD IT!
(not necessarily in that order)

Rant ends.

Not keen on the bonnet...

Getting less and less excited as the days go on!

Years ago there was teaser for the new M3 (before the whole 4 series thing came about) in Auto Express where they mentioned a 3.0 Tri-Turbo... And had some photo's of what it may look like...

It looked so awesome and I was pump... all these years on and its rather... Yawn to me sleep

I hope it is different enough in power output to not have the 435 biting at it's ankles, this didn't seem right with the E92 M3 & 335i, I know there is more to the differences than power output but in the E46 the M3 wiped the floor with the 330i by over 100BHP
There is also more than 100bhp difference in the power output of the 335i and M3 as well.

Indeed, the gap was slightly wider between the 335i and e92 M3, 114ps more vs 112ps with the 330i vs e46 M3

It's proportional to the overall power though I suppose. 100bhp between a 150bhp car and a 250bhp is much more significant than between a 350bhp and 450bhp. (example - not correct figures)

That bonnet is bloody awful! What do you need a power bulge for on a turbo straight-6? Pointless.
E46 (with a straight 6) has one...

Yes but the power difference behind the wheel is minimal between the 2 cars as the 335i has turbo torque in fact the 335i is faster in gear with a £300 chip er sorry map

A 335i feels nothing like an M3 to drive though and that is the point, the two experiences are night and day. Straight line performance is far from high on the list of priorities for a big chunk of M3 owners. A C63 AMG would wipe the floor with one in a straight line, has the badge and the build quality but hasn't sold as well as the M3 because dynamically its not as good. These types of sports saloons are plenty quick enough for the road these days, they do not all need 600bhp because its a waste, you just can't use it without losing your licence. I like to use the full rev range when I feel like it like most members. The engine sounds at its best at at the top end but the problem being that you are well into licence losing territory at the top of 3rd gear with 4 gears left. No, I would rather the money spent on making it handle better and be far more rewarding to drive and that is where the M department come in. TBH a remapped 330d let alone a 335d will probably keep up with a V8 M3 in a straight line but its just not the point. the 3**i or d are refined cars and some of them are quick. Non of them feel exciting to drive though if you take the measure of acceleration out of the equation. Comfortable, well balanced, compliant, rewarding to a degree as they are so well sorted just not exciting imo.

I guess its why people go nuts for an E30 M3. By modern standards most shopping cars would keep up in a straight line but being able to ring its neck and enjoy such a rewarding chassic at slower speeds would be the appeal for me. You can leave your foot in in the twisties and really play with it as opposed to being point and squirt.

Thres an interesting underbonnet shot from the same batch of photos aof the spy shots quotes further above.

I cant find it because i am in work but it definetly looked like a twin turbo chargecooled straight 6.

I am not so sure, a well mapped 335 will have similar power, a truck load more torque and be lighter but thats an issue that has been done to death over the years and again, misses the point.

On the topic of the M4 I think it looks great but will need to drive one before I can give it a thumbs up in the engine department. The 1M is a hoot to drive but given the choice I still opted for the M3 because of the V8 and its visceral charm. I appreciate that the V8/10s might be dead due to market pressures but would I go and buy the replacement or just keep the V8. Time will tell.
