A car review is always going to be a subjective piece, and ultimately the car will be judged against the reviewers expectations. It's likely (and indeed perfectly reasonable), that some reviewers still imagine Jags to be big and wafty...the whole mantra of Grace, Space and Pace, which everyone seems to love to band around on PH, would fit with this.

We've been summoned to Gaydon on Friday to be strapped into a car alongside Mike Cross and have it all explained to us! Or driven up and down the bumpiest bit of suspension test track until we relent. One or the other. Expect a full report next week...

And the 'x'? Redacted!

Cheers,

Dan

Good looking car overall I think, I like the sporty 'R additions, not sure if this red colour suits it though. These XJ's do look massive, the 20" wheels don't even look very big given the proportions of the rest of the car. I still think that blacked off rear pillar looks a bit naff.

Jaguar must have felt they had to up the ante with the suspension on the 'R, to justify having it in the range when they already have the Supersport.

I can't get that excited about these sorts of cars costing £100k as I can't afford to buy one, looking forward to it getting hammered by depreciation and making an interesting used buy in ten years time.

It just doesn't look 'jag' enough for me.

A car that might interest me in ten years when it will be about £6K. Until then, I can't really think who would buy it apart from a limo company, a a wealthy newly retired business person. Surely no-one under the age of 60 would buy one of these new (or the Merc or BM equivalents) with their own money? Oh to be 30 with that kind of a budget.

Does this compete with the M5 or the S-Class AMG?

I can never quite work it out.

My thoughts too, seems strange comparing it to the 5 series, pricing perhaps? (I have no idea how much an M5 is) confused

Had a trip in the back of one for a few hours a month or so ago; quicker than anything that size has the right to be, but definitely more of a cruiser(or bruiser) than other R/RS models.

If you want to prioritise ride comfort over outright speed then surely choosing the most extreme XJ is a bit of an odd choice?
I disagree that they are mutually exclusive.
But a big heavy car that has good body control at high speed on a bumpy road won't float as much as one with less body control.

You have to remember the XFR-S and XJR are Jaguar's hardcore models and not expected to sell in vast numbers. What they are expected to do are to act as halo models to tell the world that Jaguar have long done away with their fuddy duddy image and appeal to a younger audience.

These cars are also not predominantly aimed at selling in the UK, they will all go out to the new markets of the world i.e. Middle East, Russia, China etc.

If you want the softer ride, pick the SuperSport simples!

MyCC.

I'm with kambites on this one. The new M5 has been praised for good ride quality so why can't this?

Got on a Jag day last Saturday and the first car I drove was the XJ L Supersport
and can report that it was simply awesome in all departments.

2nd car we drove was the V8 F Type which also was very nice, had a lovely noise
and popped and banged like my TVR on the overrun

Both cars put a smile on your face and make you laugh while driving them -
but both me and my friend said we preferred the XJ overall

Certainly one of the best cars I have ever driven for fun factor and sheer power delivery

Sporty, blacked-out wheels don't work on these luxury behemoth bruisers, imo.

Exterior speakers, loud music, and hydraulic dance kits next?

Has to be the S-Class, the M5 is an XFR rival.

Maybe the BMW has been tuned with more of a bias towards ride comfort than body control?

having driven all 3 id say the ride quality is still far superior to competitors equivalent models
