why is the prius so hyped up

I dont understand the big hype about it being hybrid. It still only gets about 50 mpg, most modern diesels exceed that so why is it a big thing?

They are Hyped because celebs in hollywood drive them.

Because in the US they are an economical car.

Because in most states, diesel cannot be bought readily at every gas station.

In short, because it is the product of the world's largest car builder and one of the largest global businesses on the planet. As such, you are totally controlled as to what you read of it and perceive of it. Anything negative is countered by positives to several magnitudes.

Now, the positive flip side of this corporate and media dominance is tht it has opened up a niche segment which has the potential to be extremely exciting, so all in, the Prius is a good thing.
