Upgrading my mechanic qualification?
Discussion
In 2006 I got my NVQ level 2 in light vehicle mechanics. Since then I've kept doing my own cars, but not done any more recent qualifications - if I were to go back into mechanicing full time, how far behind the times am I - and which courses should I be looking at?
Would a manufacturer employ me and put me through a training course to bring me up to speed, or would I be better off with a modern night class?

Did you get your level 2 and then leave the trade straight away? As much as qualifications are always good to have it all comes down to experience I think. How confident were you working on cars when you were doing it full time?
I've worked with people who've been in the trade 40+ years without any qualifications but that's not at main dealer so don't know how that would affect it. I'm sure someone would take you on as long as you were honest about what you can and can't do.
Do you want to work at a dealer or an independent garage?
