Seriously

New battery all will be good e60 very sensitive to batteries, get a decent one on there and you will be fine

I have a 330d same year, had very strange issues when battery died, and e60s are more sensitive

If it inspires confidence, I bought my 330d 3.5 years as on 32k, it now has 180k on, still pulls like the week after I purchased it and remapped, decated it
NOOOOO! eekeekeek

it may be a deadish battery causing all of the electrics to go mental

I have an E36 and the electrics went berserk when the battery gave up.

See my post above yours - there was apparently no "low oil level" warning on the forecourt, so if the dealer is relying on the readout to check the level - like anyone else is - then there was effectively no fault.
So the car was just above minimum when it left the dealer, or was parked on a hill? This is my issue, there's obviously not been an accurate check done. The oil could not have been changed either, or its not had enough fresh oil in it.

It's not good enough being sold in that state, or maybe I'm old fashioned and expect too much confused

I haven't read much more than the first post, but I'd suggest you calm the fk down a minute. Nobody has died. It's not a NIGHTMARE!!

Take a deep breath and see what can be done.

Good luck with it however smile

I suspect you're just unreasonable.

It has been designed to check the oil through the dash readout. If it wasn't reporting it as unacceptably low when it was sold, why would anyone have reason to doubt it?

It needs a new battery as has been said, they can't cock this up so just givd them chance. ...
They can, see my post above.

Needs to be coded to the car, not just swapped out.
It's a fair cop guv, spelleded a werd rong two.

Not unreasonable at all, I just wouldn't accept a car from a dealer that's obviously not had much in the way of a service.

I don't know the circumstance of the sale though, so will leave it at that.

On the late BMW stuff with no dipstick there is a feature on the dash/i-drive where you can check the level. It can take up to 15mins of running (after servicing for example) before it gives the correct level though. Rubbish system.

On what planet does it seem a good idea to make a car without a dipstick?

I thought the electronic handbrake in my own car was stupid. On reflection, it's still stupid. Just not as stupid as doing away with the dipstick.

Whilst some E60's do not have a dipstick, the 2004 530d *does* have a conventional dipstick.

It's the later petrol models which do not.

So on the basis of no dipstick how do you keep the level at a proper level without relying on a bloody light coming on and that's assuming the light works!
How do you know what amount if oil to top up by?
Seems barny to me.

Guess work! When the system states 'oil level ok' it could be (for arguments sake) a litre down but still 'ok'

Here's a Google image of E9O oil level indicator.

On E60's with no dipstick it tells you the oil level in iDrive - it doesn't simply say 'ok'. You can see the level.

But this is not relevant as a 2004 530d *has* got a dipstick.

Funny that. I don't answer my work phone after 11pm either.

Mechanical suicide really.
The Smart thing is a bit whacky but the oil extractor thing has been discussed before on here but can't say I'm a fan. No wonder the Smart engine has a poor reputation for going bang.

No, because you add nothing until it reaches the minimum mark, at which point you add one litre. It's explained in the manual. I think it even pops up with 'Add 1 litre engine oil' on the display.

But the OP's car has a dipstick anyway...

Of course you can!

On any E60 you can check whether the oil level is ok - some using a dipstick, others using iDrive.
