After reading about the C63 AMG in readers cars section I was thinking about what I would call super saloons. Something with a big engine, wrapped in a saloon body. I used to own a 156 GTA and loved it.

Off I went to the classifieds to look for said super saloon, but I'm having a mind blank. With a measly budget of £1500ish, what super saloons could you pick up? I'm stuck!

You'd maybe get this for £1750 or so - close enough?

E39 540i isn't slow (4.4 litre V8, 286bhp iirc). If your budget is limited, be wary that running costs are going to be on the high side.

Can't say many of the above are striking me as Super Saloons, more like barges.

i've seen a few B5 S4's around the 1.5k, remap would get 300 bhp.

A scubby doo with a few mods would get 300 - 350 in saloon guise..

A barge, but my A8 4.2 is pretty quick when it needs to be.

Not sure I really like it though, purchased price was £700 though it needed the brakes sorting out.

Might just be me, but many of these aren't "Super Saloons". For me it's something the likes of Lotus Carlton/RS6/M5/AMG E55, and can easily accomodate 4 large adults yet be as quick and entertaining as almost anything else on the market when new

Only way into that market for £1500 would be an extremely shabby E34 M5 3.6 I fear

I love S4s, 156 GTAs, etc, but I just don't view them as "Super Saloons"

Oh, you want a little car? In which case you really can't do much better than an M3 4-door, but you'll never find one worth buying for £1500.......

Agreed, however you aren't going to pick up one of those for 1.5k.

E39 540iA = barge
E39 540i/6 = super(ish) saloon

Realistically, £1500 is what you should be budgeting for a service on a super saloon, not the whole car.

I only wish I could! I'd have them all, plus an Alpina B10 BT for good measure smile

I'm not actually looking at getting one, I was just looking to see what you could get in this budget. The answer seems to be very little unless you want a barge.

For me, a super saloon is a normal saloon car that has been fettled. A 156 GTA is a prime example. Lower, stiffer, bigger engine, body kit etc.

I'm suggesting that a 540i with an autobox is a bit barge-y, while a manual one is more like 75% of an M5.
