Honda Accord Type-R

Mondeo ST220

Vectra VXR

All fit your criteria although i'm not sure you can get an ST220 or a VXR for £1500.

I'm not actually looking at getting one, I was just looking to see what you could get in this budget. The answer seems to be very little unless you want a barge.

I would view it in the same way as the term "SuperCar" is used, i.e. the ultimate saloon out there on the market. Obviously this is a moving target, so whereas you can get a version of a standard E-class these days (eg E350) that is more powerful than the old Porsche-built W124 500E, only one of these I would class as a Super Saloon

Don't mean to sound disrespectful to anyone who has one, and I really do quite like them, but a 156 GTA is "just" a fast saloon IMO

That's a rather individual definition of a super-saloon. Sounds like you're really looking for a fast repmobile (nothing wrong with that of course) which means only one answer is possible...... a manual Passat W8 4.0!

Maybe Super Saloon is the wrong terminology

But that Passat....fking ugly but I bet its quick. Would Q car be more appropriate?

For me a super saloon is something that has a recognisable saloon body and interior, but can keep up in terms of speed and/or occasion, with the some of the better exotica.

Small list really if we're talking current stuff.. Top of the range AMG Black E Class maybe? A Bentley/RR? Etc.

Lots more if we look back a bit and compare to their contemporaries. That mental Lancia with the Ferrari engine for example.

Shirly, C36 / C43 AMG flavoured Merc's must be a good shout for half decent Super Saloon.

For something a bit different, with a good turn of speed, some added "specialness" and handles well, how about an E34 Alpina B10 3.5? Might just about get one near budget if you shop around

Interesting topic this because I wouldn't classify an Impreza or an Evo as a super saloon. It would have to be something based on a more mundane model (I'm aware you could buy underpowered Imprezas at the time) as in the M5 above or indeed any performance-oriented high-end model. To be fair, I'd be hand pushed to classify a Sapphire Cosworth as a super saloon (although it would certainly be considered).

Oh, and one more thing...Lotus Carlton. wink

With a measly budget of £1500ish, what super saloons could you pick up?
Is that the budget for a modest first service ..... or for buying the car?

To give you a better idea of what is a 'Super Saloon' here's the Autocars top 5 list of super saloons and at the bottom of the list is 9 more super saloons ;-)

I drive a Jag XJR which has a 0-60 time of 5.2 seconds and yes its a bit of a barge but when in sports mode and you plant your foot you'd better be on a dry road and pointing in a straight line or the back end will try over taking you ;-)

OP, here are my costs from the previous year of ownership of my S Type R £7000, 4.2l 400hp.

Tyres- £1000 for a set (which it needed)
Service- £350
Ignition barrel collapsed £300
Colant bottle split, which would have cost £200 if my dad wasnt able to mend it and do the labour.
Steering wheel clockspring (excluding fitted as, again, my dad did it) £100
Track end rods, and anti roll bar links £400

By all means, if your budget is £1500 because you have taken running costs into consideration then buy a Super Saloon.
If you havnt considered the running costs and £1500 is all you can muster in total, then id forget it.
Maybe a sports saloon like the vxr astra is the way to go?

VR4 is a good suggestion.

As mentioned before, I'm not getting one, was just browsing.

I had one of these from new, kept it from 2000 to 2003.

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/v...

Really enjoyed it - fettled engine, interior and bodywork, all from the factory. Handled very well (lower suspension than others in the range), sounded great. Not that fast with just 192BHP but still a very enjoyable drive. Not in the C63 league, though.

I like the way that Vauxhall keep producing hotted up models, like it was still the 1980s and 90s, when everyone did it. Where's the current Mondeo ST220 or Accord Type-R? Even Renault and Peugeot made V6 saloons, as did Citroen, if memory serves, with a mentally engined Xantia!

My GSi was the 4 door and Star Silver, like the one advertised in the link. Saw my old one outside a local MOT station last year - really chuffed to glimpse it, 12 years on...

The Evo has a saloon body, delivers blistereing performance and has a rather respectable pedigree....not sure why it wouldn't be considered a super saloon.

I have an E36 M3 Evo saloon in silver. Its certainly a subtle way to transport 4 people fairly quickly.
