Ok not very super, but quick saloons

- Vauxhall Vectra B 2.6 V6 MSD

- Ford Mondeo ST24

- Audi A6 2.7TT ( Not sure if in budget)

- Subaru Legacy GTB? A Saloon version ( Are any saloons in budget? I know estates can be had from approx £2k)

E39 540i isn't slow (4.4 litre V8, 286bhp iirc). If your budget is limited, be wary that running costs are going to be on the high side.
Briefly owned one of these (long story!). Brilliant car but running costs (especially fuel) were ridiculous.

What's more my S60 T5 in standard trim was just as quick and a nicer place to be IMHO. But all of that is a mere insignificance to having a big RWD V8.

Hmm, T5, I know one running neigh on 400bhp that went not long ago wink

Ive decided I need a super saloon.

I took my mum to Mercedes Benz world yesterday for her birthday and she spent an hour flinging (with me in the back) a CLS63 AMG around. It is frankly astounding the way it gathers (and loses!) pace and the handling on track is very impressive.

Whilst my mum wasnt exactly 'fast' around the track, the instructor who took us out afterwards definitely was. Unbelievable.

I now have an unhealthy desire for one of these (cant quite afford a new one at £100k...);

Why not a Volvo V70/850 T-5 or a Saab 9-3/5 aero?

Loads of those around at and below £1500.

I picked up my 9-5 2.3t for £950. It's got 185hp and next month it's getting remapped to 230hp, still within budget.

Lots of possibilities with the swedes!

A super saloon would be an m5/m3, c43/55/63, RS4/6, XJR etc...those kind of cars, all the 540is mentioned are nice but just barges.

In short I don't think your £1500 will get you a supersaloon although it might get you a nice barge.

I had one of these from new, kept it from 2000 to 2003.

Really enjoyed it - fettled engine, interior and bodywork, all from the factory. Handled very well (lower suspension than others in the range), sounded great. Not that fast with just 192BHP but still a very enjoyable drive. Not in the C63 league, though.

I like the way that Vauxhall keep producing hotted up models, like it was still the 1980s and 90s, when everyone did it. Where's the current Mondeo ST220 or Accord Type-R? Even Renault and Peugeot made V6 saloons, as did Citroen, if memory serves, with a mentally engined Xantia!

My GSi was the 4 door and Star Silver, like the one advertised in the link. Saw my old one outside a local MOT station last year - really chuffed to glimpse it, 12 years on...
I know I shouldn't, but I really like that. I looked around for one about 18 months ago but could only find the hatchback - saloon looks so much better.

I had a Xantia V6 for 2 years... baught it cause I needed something asap,it was cheap, well maintained. One of the best automotive surprises I have ever had. Highway runs were an absolute pleasure, nice engine and the suspension is unrivaled in comfort and stability. Utterly reliable as well.

VR4 is a good suggestion.

As mentioned before, I'm not getting one, was just browsing.
Good shout and lovely cars but you'd be hard pushed to get one that isn't butchered for £1500.

Had an e39 540 and would class it as a q car rather than a super saloon but it could shift when it wanted to embarrass people.

Also had a 535 but after the 540 it just felt a bit asthmatic and that little bit softer than the 540.

My VR-4 was a lot more what I reckon the OP's on about, 'fairly' discreet car but scarily fast anywhere, although a lot of that was due to the AYC and it's ability to round corners at ridiculous speeds.

Just to add to others comments, though - at the time I had the VR4 it was only 5 years old and had FSH but I still went through £2000 in servicing the AYC and oils plus a £1000 AYC repair, and a full set of tyres, discs and pads for another grand.

Expensive but enjoyable 18 months though.
