I love the 911 Turbo 'brand', but this excites me as much as semi skimmed milk..

Maybe I'm having an off day

A very , very impressive car.

Clearly an engineering marvel.

It must be said though ( and I am sure Porsche are sick of hearing this) but Nissan have raised the bar so high back in 2008 with the GT-R that you still have to ask yourself how Porsche manage to charge 2X as much as Nissan do to get a similar result. Torque vectoring, 4WD, a stack of short double clutch gears and some fat turbos'. Nissan did this in 2008 at 50% of the price.

Now the new 991 certainly betters the GT-R (which is pretty old now) but it does put into perspective what a great achievement Mizuno-san pulled off with the original GT-R.

The GT-R is not the success in the Uk that it is in markets like the US ( we seem prejudice against the big Datsun here ) but it is the elephant in the room IMO when considering this type of car. I think the GT-R forced Porsche to raise their game and this is the rather lovely result.

Well done Porsche.

I wonder what is next to come?
I think the exact opposite of most of this...

Clearly the price of the Nissan is nonsense - surely it's not making any money for Nissan, because it doesn't need to. They make money from everything else. Porsche make (mostly) sports cars. The 911 costs what it costs, and they have to make it work financially.

The GTR was no doubt impressive, but I certainly don't view it positively. It hasn't made companies "raise their game" - it's made sports car companies make their cars much faster. It has manufacturers tripping over themselves, fighting for the next lap record (who cares), and when something like the GT86 comes along, manufacturers have to sell driver interaction as a gimmick, as if it needs justification.

The direction the GTR has pointed sports cars in is disappointing. Of course, Porsche and Ferrari had to match the pace of the GTR - being as fast as your rival is obviously a requirement of any sports car - but it's a sad direction to have gone in. Manual gearboxes are gone from virtually all sports cars now (idiotic), and ultimate pace, through a combination of big power boosts, those automatic gearboxes and fancy electronics has taken centre stage.

This Porsche, along with every 991 so far, leaves me completely and utterly cold. I think Porsche have to be very very careful...
If sports cars weren't getting faster and incorporating every available new technology available to manufacturers then I would be disappointed.

I guess some people should stick to old cars with manual gearboxes, wind up windows and starting handles.

Actually I was wondering what sort of person is rude to a complete stranger for no reason whatsoever so I took a gander at your profile and the picture of, I presume, yourself contained therein.

I was not surprised to see you conform to a particular small sports car stereotype: In short you look a complete and utter tosser. I'm sure this won't be fresh news to you as I imagine it's an insult you're forced to live with on a day-to-day basis, and have probably got quite used to it now, eh tosser?

PS Tuck your Tesco shirt in.

Its Hugo Boss but thanks for the concern. out of interest, what is the more cost effective 350BHP per tonne car you are eluding to? Makes me laugh all the people who come on this thread and slate this car and yet fail to provide a reasoned argument or an alternative choice let alone suggest what improvements or changes they would like to see to the car in question.

Not sure how he was rude.

Funny how you refer to a "stereotype" when you think about the definition of the word : "a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing".

Quite frankly your post was almost as stupid as your reply above.

I've noticed. biggrin

Umm..Tuscan, Gallardo, Cerbera, R8, Sagaris, A number of Mercs (I think), Tamora, Jag XKR GT all compete at roughly the same bhp/tonne as the porker and cost less. Are they as practical? Well, personally I didn't find the 997 I owned particularly practical and got rid after a year. Good car though.

I will ignore the ones no longer in production for no other reason than I need a new car supported by a warranty. Mercs (other than a CLS) do not interest me. Jag, getting a bit long in the tooth now as is the Gallardo but Craig at Panglambo did make me a tempting offer. So that leaves the R8, had a couple of Audi's and they were not exactly exciting plus the servicing costs lead my wife to ban me from buying another. I find the 911 to be very practical, 2 up plus enough luggage for a 2 week touring holiday (including golf clubs). I can drive it and park it anywhere, decent mpg, reliable, in 23K miles mine has cost me tires, fuel and just recently a set of rear discs (my own fault). Quick to smile

I found the 997 was too small inside, seats (standard, not sport) were too small; I could live with the small boot but not the constant dazzle at night because the car was so low, the snow scoop bonnet, inadequate air conditioning... .

As far as small sports cars go they are quite practical...as long as you don't forget they're a small sports car. But to say a 911 is practical sports car - no chance.

So, your alternative more practical sports cars are?..........

Well I agree, but that's kind of my point. It's practical for a sports car.

I'm 6'1" and didn't feel cramped height-wise, the car was too narrow. My fault entirely but I'd always wanted a porker and was blown away on the test drive. Actually not the first time that's happened, lol.

I'm sticking to fast comfy saloons now, learnt my lesson.

Obviously people don't buy these cars for economy, but 29mpg is pretty impressive IMO.

Don't take it to heart since, according to some, the only people slating the Turbo are those who can't afford it and therefore their opinion doesn't count. I like Hugo Boss but there's nothing wrong with Tesco smile
