I'm looking for a cheap tool chest for the garage to keep my stash of tools tidy.

Just come across this halfords one for £50.

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...

Will this be any good? Worth it for 50quid?

Also does anyone know how flat packed it would be? Would it fit in the boot of a CLK?

Cheers

Any reason you think it won't be any good? Would you be willing to spend more money on one?

I'm sure Halfords can supply you with the packing dimensions, or simply buy online and get it delivered.

They come pre-assembled, minus the casters. It went in the boot of my Accord fairly easily though.

Mine is slightly different in that it has two full length, slightly deeper drawers in the bottom unit but the top unit is the same. They're not bad for what they cost but mine isn't used for tools anymore as I found they just don't stand up to huge amounts of abuse.

yes If you want something to store your tools in, it'll be fine. If you want something that will give you a pleasurable sensation every time you move a drawer, spend five times the money on something with roller-bearings.

I'd go for the Clarke ones from machine mart. My roller bearing one is still going strong.

I picked up the top half, full of tools in the sale around February for £15 - had a couple of spanners missing.

Seems OK. Its survived so far. Certainly no Snap-On or MAC but will stop your tools being on the floor.

I have these:

I think they're worth the extra (& with a trade card they were a superb deal).

Line the drawers with cuts of carpet tile as the rubber inlays aren't great.

I've got a Halfords roller bearing chest (three drawer + bottom locker) with a five drawer top part. Had it years. Well pleased.

A roller bearing chest for less than £50? Get it bought, that's ridiculously cheap.

You could spend 10 times more than that for something not much better. If you are only using it for home mechanic stuff, then it will be absolutely spot on.

I had the none-roller bearing version for £50 and I thought that was good value.

With roller bearings I'd take their hand off.

If it's the same as mine was it almost certainly won't be flat packed. You may find the tool chest is sitting inside the half assembled cupboard. I don't know how big your boot is but I'd be surprised if it didn't fit.

I hadn't noticed it was roller bearing! That's very good then.

Thanks guys, just been in and had a play.
The fact the cheap one had a broken door on the display model didn't inspire confidence, and did seem quite small compared to the pro And the pro version seems very good quality. So have gone for the professional 5 door cabinet with 7 door chest for £250.

The only problem is the offer is not on in store and was told I have to reserve online wait an hour, then I can collect Instore for the online price banghead

Not quite sure of there logic here......

But will wait an hour and hope it will fit in the boot smile

I've had one of these for nearly 10 years... a bit dented 'n' scratched but still good

The toolbox in the original link is dreadful. Woefully flimsy and not very well constructed with poor weight bearing capacity. You'll soon get annoyed.

OP - you'd be better off putting your money into a second hand example. The pro and industrial versions are far better. I use the industrial units myself and they're very good for the money. More so if you know someone with a Trade Card.

Well it was a very tight fit to get in the car, had to take out the box and only just fitted on pass seat, (big job auto, as was ontop of gear stick!)

But very pleased with it, and seems to have swallowed my tools up nicely smile

The only annoying thing is you have to have the top lid open to open the top trays.

All this for £250 with lifetime warranty seems decent value.

Considering a couple of these bundles for work, any negatives, they look reasonable to me:

£400 together instead of £600.

Only negative I can see is that they were only £299 on Monday when I got mine.

And getting them home. Big box (won't fit through BMW 3 series doors and they weigh about 90kg for the two pieces.

Still look good value though.
