Relative to decent cars they are. Defenders are simple agricultural vehicles, so yes they are st on open roads. Oh, I see you're from Shropshire, that explains everything. My parents lived near Ludow for several years; lovely place, lovely county but the great roads were marred by hopeless, slow-moving roadblocks in the shape of defenders and discos belching out black smoke.

I think i can class this as petrolhead sacrilege - people who brick up their garage and turn it into a dining/kitchen/laundry area. It's sad to see this happen....

My main objection was to the word "Liability". Yes Defenders are agricultural but I never struggle to keep up with traffic. Blame the drivers not the cars wink

We had a 110xs for a year; I lavished it with attention, forgave all it's quirks but the constant, dangerous breakdowns eventually got too much so sold it and took a hefty hit. More the dealers fault; "Used Approved" was more "fit for auction" but I did enjoy many elements of ownership and they definitely won't hold up traffic if driven properly.

Another killer was £460 RFL on a 122bhp vehicle...!

If I got one again, I'd go for an old Series model.

A mk1 Audi TT appeals to me. I think it may have track car potential when stripped and caged, or something like that. I think it would look quite god too.

While I agree with you, I can see why people do so, most garages are not big enough for modern cars, so why not utilize the space more wisely.

Come on guys, back on topic this is too good a thread to ruin with arguments about sodding Defenders!

My first experience of "getting the back end out" was accidentally on a wet roundabout in a 340 Volvo.
Must have looked a proper tt to everyone around me...

Colin McRae I am not...

The people opposite us are just having this done - their garage door was wide enough for....errrmmm... maybe a Jimny?!

We have a fairly large garage but again the door is narrow and we have driveway space for three cars so use that instead - just means a bit more cleaning off of seagull merde!

All of our neighbours use their garages - which are large enough for their cars - for storage, kids play rooms etc.

Having lived overseas for much of my life, I found it odd when I arrived here to see so many homes had garages that were not used for parking cars in. My cars are both garaged overnight while my neighbours have a larger double garage that has been converted to a playroom, two cars on the drive and another two parked so as to get in everyone's way.

My PH sacrileges:

1. I'm not A Driving God - I like the odd bit of speed, love fast cornering but tend to cruise about more than anything else so that I don't end up in a hedge.

2. I am useless at DIY - can put petrol in, change the oil, keep the tyres at the correct pressure and maintain the appearance but don't ask me to fix anything. Maybe change a lightbulb...but not much more. Possibly worse than Clarkson.

My two:
1. Really really enjoying the Skoda Fabia 1.1 (i think) hire car.
2. Using the economy mode on long drives and seeing what MPG I can get

Forgive me father I have sinned!

Good thread!

I never drive over 70mph on the motorway.

I never understood all the praise heaped on the Mk1 Focus.

I'm over 40 and still own a noisy Impreza.

My 205 GTI replaced a Renault 19. I preferred the 19.

I like the idea of LPG.

I am currently driving a 1.2 Corsa in lieu of my M6 all the time. Apart from a single trip to work and back, I haven't even used my BMW for two weeks.

I test drove an E90 320D along side a 165PS Diesel Astra the other day. Preferred the Vauxhall

I like vans, so much so I may buy a Berlingo (Instead of the Astra I tested)

I liked Max Power back in the day and still quite like some of the stanced cars about now.
