Legend has it that a very famous comedian had the plate COM 1C. He was threatened with legal action under the trade descriptions act.

A famous local plate that's been on a sciecento for years. Another one that the owner has been offered big money for many times but never sold... now he's deed, someone in his family(i assume) is selling it off.

Extremely rare? I should friggin' well hope so. In fact, I'd insist on it being totally unique if I were to be wanting to buy it...

...surely that's the whole point of registration plates? You know, their unique uniqueness. Journalists... rolleyes

Ha, quite.

It did indeed sell for £200,000. eek But the elderly lady was the seller, on behalf of the deceased owner, presumably a lady friend of his.

NEW AUCTION RECORD FOR CALLAN'S!!!

The Fine Art and Antique Sale held on the 7th November proved to be a record sale. The undoubted highlight was the sale of a private registration plate AG 1. The plate was sold along with the registered car - A 1999 Fiat Seicento.

There were ten telephone lines booked. The auction galleries were crowded to capacity, with many potential buyers and spectators forced to watch proceedings from the outdoors.

The bidding frenzy started an £60,000 and with a sea of hands, the bidding reared over £100,000 in only a minute. The hands started to fall at around £120,000 and then it was down to the phones at £150,000. The phone battle continued to £180,000 after which it was a duel between the last two phone bidders. The hammer fell to great cheers and applause at £200,000 - A new house record for Callan's.

It was particularly nice that the beneficiary, a lovely elderly lady, sat in the audience, wiping away tears in total shock and disbelief. Once the excitement settled she quietly left through the crowds.

For Callan's the auctioneers it is particularly rewarding to achieve this awaiting auction result, and once again Callan's have proven that with the power of the internet, big results can be achieved.

Does anyone have any knowledge on the origin/whereabouts of RD 1?

These links indicate it could belong to Ron Dennis?

Well, it is on a black SL63, and it was originally issued by Reading. If no-one beats me to it I'll post the date of issue when I get back on Wednesday.
..and two days later than planned, I can confirm it was issued in September 1928.read
