£9700 +VAT & Fees back in 2006. I think that makes it one of the pricier single letters sold, they usually look quite cheap compared to today!

Forgive me and dont take this the wrong way but what is so good about these?
What do people use to define a good plate?

Almost impossible to define, it is in the eye of the beholder. It's easier to say what is NOT good - dodgy fonts, mis-spacing to try and spell names...over to the Crappy plates forum with those. These low number undated plates are generally thought of as good, especially number ones...personally I also like plates with history (ie original issues rather than DVLA sale jobs) but each to their own.
And in case anyone else gives a hoot...JLL is a DVLA plate whereas 'reverse' BAE was issued in 1957 by Bristol.

I would generally agree with M3DGE but not forgetting "investment" 1 JLL sold for £5100 in 1999 and is Certainly worth a lot more today so "James Leonard Layton" could have bought a lovely plate earning more money than money in the bank...

You are thinking of Bob Monkhouse? :

"They laughed when I said I was going to be a comedian ... They're not laughing now."
