There is a DVLA plate auction coming up this month - does anyone have any advice on how best to go about bidding, and any other pointers for a newbie to the auction scenario please?

Don't do what you did smile

Reminding people about it is not a great idea.

Know the real price of each bid. http://www.dvlaauction.co.uk/index.php/live-auctio... A £250 bid is actually going to cost you £428.

Know your limit. Exceed it with great caution.

There's three top tips. Someone else can give you some more if they want. I'm off to check out the DVLA site beer for the heads up smile

that made me laugh - my budget is small, but as I've looked on these auctions for the past few years and am now in the position to potentially buy I thought I'd look into it.

Its not the cost btw, I've seen the link you've posted before, its more the mechanics of bidding. I can't be there in person, so is it best to do it via phone, internet or?

Relatively straight forward process to internet bid but you do need to pre-register and ensure you have everything good to go in advance - they will have details of the credit card to pay for it, allocate you a bidder number etc.

Im also bidding but chose to place an absentee bid. If it goes for more than my maximum then so be it, at least i wont be tempted to place 'just one more' bid... in my experience people do get carried away at the dvla auctions and often bid above the realistic values.

I did that to get mine, was the perfect bid seemingly as it went for my maximum.

From personal experience, it's very easy to forget the additions when you're in the middle of the auction and the bid is against you, however clearly you are thinking at the outset. I managed to buy at slightly over my budget, only to 'remember' there was also now a four figure additional figure to pay.
