Real Good Number Plates : Vol 4
Discussion
OT
A plate I narrowly missed out on a DVLA auction (stuck in a meeting!) sold for for circa £4k to one of the big boys and since advertised for £20k. I keep getting marketing texts offering 30% off.
2 years later, they still have it and I really want it, it's my ideal plate, any thoughts of how to approach them.
I was thinking of offering cost plus £1k, am I unrealistic?

There's an update on www.singlesingle.co.uk
3V and E6 are shown on their latest cars
And 24 new spots in the past 3 years all shown on the main page.
There is some tidying up still to do but the main bits are there

Are you now maintaining that? I thought of asking Shmee about it a while back. It would be great to have it kept up to date.3V and E6 are shown on their latest cars

I'm not sure if you are allowed to "self nominate" and I don't think my new plate qualifies as the digits are not a popular set of initials. I have bought "WXA 6".
The plate is an original 1959 London issue plate which was originally on a Morgan.
This was my father in law's first car. It was transferred to a few other Morgan's before being sold in the 1990s on the back of poor advice. I managed to buy it back last week!
My father in law is a friend of Charles Morgan/was a friend of Peter and is a published Morgan historian. His cars/the numberplate features on the front of his books.
My 2 year old son is passionate about cars and has a real connection with his granddad so I want him to eventually have my Mercedes SL with his grandads numberplate on it!
I'd love to see a picture of WXA 6 on the car, as you may recall I also have a couple of WXA platesThe plate is an original 1959 London issue plate which was originally on a Morgan.

I'd be interested to see what advice you get as I missed out on a plate in 2003 (sold for about £3k) and that too is for sale with one of the big names. It remains unsold 13 years later.A plate I narrowly missed out on a DVLA auction (stuck in a meeting!) sold for for circa £4k to one of the big boys and since advertised for £20k. Over the years they've tried to sell it to me numerous times - at £25k, then at £15k (both plus VAT) and each time I tell them it's too much money for me. They once asked what I would offer and I did say £1k - it was politely refused.

My mate did exactly for this. Plate sold to a dealer for about 3K, appeared on their site for £15K. There it sat for about 18 months. He made an offer of just above the auction cost (plus fees, etc).A plate I narrowly missed out on a DVLA auction (stuck in a meeting!) sold for for circa £4k to one of the big boys and since advertised for £20k. Initially they said no. He asked again later, and they'd 'think about it'. They came back three days later and accepted his offer.
A plate is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it, and if you're the only one who wants it.....

Breadvan, look if the price has VAT added. If it does, then the plate is likely to be owned by the numberplate company (or they speculatively acquired it at auction). If so, you might get more traction as the decision to sell is theirs. If no VAT is applicable then it is probably a consignment sale and they are only acting as a middle man and so the decision is the vendors.

If it's 30% off then it will be a stock number for RT I presume.
They don't need to sell and won't sell for a small profit - they'll happily sit on it to get the right price.
However, your best option is to put an offer in on a Monday before the end of the month. They then think about it, and then as the staff are target driven you may be able to get a better price on the Friday of the end of the month as they need to get their bonus for the month or similar.
However, I can almost guarantee you won't ever get your plate for less than 5 figures if it's up at £20k.
Good luck!
