The article says that the platform is the new aluminium one being developed for the 3-series competitor. So there's no connection to the Evoque.

I wouldn't go that far. It's just sad that a car company I liked is turning out the same basic configuration as every other company - vw, ford, Kia - jaguar's just another SUV manufacturer now.
Damn those immensely successful, class leading, profit making mainstream manufacturers tongue out

(Said distinctly tongue in cheek, and not intended to provoke!)

Not related to the Evoque in any way.

Looks good. Not a big fan of 4x4's but well done Jag.
Knocks the socks of the other prestige competitors. Hope it sells well.

I think the feeling amongst some is that the white goods manufacturers that appeal to image conscious generic people are not brands that some can identify with. Everyone knows that companies need to chase sales etc but in widening the appeal with more and more generic cars they lose some of the qualities that attracted some of the original buyers who then feel compelled to look elsewhere.

It's neither objective nor rational, but some people are simply turned off when the types of people they don't identify with start flocking to the brand of car they used to like. When it becomes the obvious choice it almost looks like you've just copied the neighbours rather than chose it yourself, and the appeal has gone.

Can't be helped really. Jaguar needs to cut some buyers adrift to attract bigger numbers of new buyers.

You're completely right - I like old second hand jags, I don't give jaguar any new sales at the moment and probably won't ever now! I had £10k for an old m3 and accidentally purchased a £700 Audi A8 v8 that I'm now very happy with.

I am not the consumer a successful car company should ever chase!

I thought the same until I watched a youtube video of the Siberian highway in Russia, or any sort of "Road" in China. Now I get the 4x4 thing - just not in the UK so much. Unless you live in the midlands, up north, on an island... read there is room for it.

I'd take an Evoque over this. Jaguar and SUV just don't sit we'll with me as will be the case for Alfa, Maserati and also applies to Porsche and BMW in my mind. Contentious but honest...

It seems Jaguar have floated the concept to test feedback. Ian McCallum even said they were "seeking permission" to build it in his interview at the reveal. I assume the opinions that will really count will be those of owners of new Jaguars and existing owners in the crossover market. As the owner of a Sportbrake and a Freelander, he has my permission!

On the basis of the limited information available, the modular architecture makes sense. The new car, JLR says, will be built at Solihull. It would not surprise me to discover in the fullness of time that bits of this architecture find their way into some Land Rover products too.

I have no doubt that it will sell - but that doesn't stop me hating it in both concept and design. Soon to be hanging on your back bumper on the M25/M1/M4

The thing is, I never 'got' SUVs until I drove a few of them!

Almost all of the premium SUVs (a term which I hate, but I suppose there's not much else you can call them) are just lovely cars to drive and immensely practical. Add to that, the fact that things like the new Range Rover Sport are fun to drive, genuinely capable off road and great to look at, and I think they make a really pretty good case for themselves.

Ultimately, no, most owners don't use the off road capability, but then that's the case with anything that isn't an 'appliance'. I bet the percentages of those who use them off road is similar to the percentage of sports car owners who take their cars on track or drive anywhere close to the handling limits.

In many respects, I think spending premium money on an SUV is actually far more valid than doing the same on a sports car. The day to day practicality of something like a Range Rover is not in any way affected by it being a 4x4. A Boxter however is, by being a sports car, impractical for many people.

I know for one, if I had 50-60k to spend on only one car and had a family, something like a Cayenne, Range Rover or Discovery is where my money would be going!

Cayenne roofline and evoke rear lights are the first things I saw in the design. That front end looks fresh for an SUV though.

I like this, I thought a Jag SUV would have look st, kind of like a mk1 Porsche Cayenne did. But they pulled this off. Is it based on a Land Rover? Its a shame they took so long to come out with an SUV.

that's very pretty, I't looks like it might buck the trend and be an SUV with a usable boot too.

In hindsight, the front 3/4 view looks ace because it seems that it has a 'wheel at all four corners' stance - ie, minimal rear overhang - almost like a rufty-tufty hot hatch with a low roofline. Which is nice yes

But in side-view it has a bit of an arse, like it's wearing a bustle, which has an unfortunate whiff of that Lexus SUV thing. Which is naff irked

I so want to hate this. confused

On one hand, I don't see the point in it really. I appreciate that companies need to diversify to survive but surely that's what the Land Rover part of JLR is for? If the RR Sport is meant to be a sporty, luxury SUV then why are they making this sporty, luxury SUV with a different badge?

But still... I can't help but quite like it. I can't see me having one myself, but I certainly wouldn't object if my girlfriend wanted one. I also suppose though that VAG have produced a multitude of competing models that all slightly step on each others toes, yet seem to be largely achieving world domination, so a little overlap probably won't hurt. A slight drop in LR sales for a big increase in Jag ones gives JLR a bigger market share in total at the end of the day. Different people like different brands and any sales that can be stolen away form the German "Big Three" will help the company in the long run.

Reading that back it would appear that I've actually managed to convince myself that it's a good idea in the space of one post! rolleyes
