I worked airside at Heathrow for a while. You don't need to wear a seatbelt but you must put your lights on.

So I went through a stage of jumping in my van wherever I was, slapping my lights on and driving off with no belt on.

Always in the car, often not whilst driving around town in one of the work vans.....have no idea why.

As a kid I always remember my grandparents and some of my uncles doing the "pretend I'm wearing it" thing. Never really got that one even then! I sometimes get a passenger ride in my Dad's 50's beetle and it's truly terrifying. No belts, seriously close to that windscreen, old-school sprung seats and seatbacks that don't even click into place(!) I'm sure even 15MPH would be enough to kill you in the right/wrong circumstances!

Here in the USA its surprising how many people don't wear them because "I dont like the government telling me to".

The government also makes traffic lights turn red. And puts up stop signs. And railway crossing barriers. Are these ignorable too???

In the car? Yes

Won't drive if anybody in the car isn't wearing one.

For some reason I don't wear it in a taxi. Met too many fking weirdo's of drivers.

Was glad I was wearing it when I rolled the car though!

In the US, pretty much it seems. You have to stick it to the man where you can.

I don't wear it in the lorry because I am sitting in the crumple zone, I can't make quick maneuvers to avoid anything coming at me so I want to be able to get myself out of the way. The only way a seatbelt is useful in a truck is if it falls over, they're a liability for the rest of the time.

I wear a seatbelt most of the time in my car. I really have to remind myself to do it though, it's not an automatic thing for me to do and never has been.

Yes and refuse to drive if anyone isn't wearing their seatbelt.

yeah, I never feel quite right belting up in a minicab either, unless it's going at NSL speeds. Also black cabs in London don't have seat belts, or at least didn't last time I got one (a few years ago!)

Can't imagine why you'd not.
Still, it's about time someone turned up and told the story of this bloke they know who's brother had a crash and was thrown clear and survived and the medics said that not wearing a belt saved him so they never wear one 'cos it's safer.
This did actually happen a to a friend's Dad. Because he wasn't wearing his belt he got thrown into the passenger footwell as the RHS of the car was run over by a lorry.

Mind you, he's a terrible driver so he probably cause the accident in the first place.

Always,I Saw a Cortina hit a bus stop as a young teen before the law changed,
none of us wore them back then,my parents didn`t and neither did any one else it seems.

The guy came through the screen ten foot from us,He was apparently dead before he hit the screen, from internal damage...
I had to drive that car for 5 miles with hair and bits of flesh all flapping around on the broken screen and swirling around the car in the wind, twas hard work for me that one!
Plus without a seat belt the airbag is going to do enough damage on its own without the dash and steering wheel crushing you and slamming all your internal organs into one another.
Thank you for this. It's rare that I'll see a post on PH about seatbelts or speeding that manages to eloquently portray how it's a really bad idea not to do it, but you've managed it without slipping into nonsense about imminent death, etc. thumbup

I don't think anyone would argue that seatbelts are not safer, however I must re-iterate,your face your windscreen.

Always, feels weird without. Just like riding any motorcycle without lid.
Even managed to convince my extremely stubborn father to put his seatbelt on regularly, now he does it out of habit which is a great relief.

My sister, although only started to drive last year refuses to do so, but she'll get there soon. By law enforcement or nagging.
The 1% chance you may be better off not wearing a seatbelt is simply no argument for me.

Don't know if it's any good in a classic deathtrap, but I'll try to avoid hitting anything with my Fiat 500 wearing the 'seatbelt'.

I always wear mine, no question.

However, before they were compulsory I argued against them for a time. That was because I suffered a very sudden and very severe fire in my Ginetta G4. My first instinct was to grab the door handle and pile out on to the pavement. I wouldn't have wanted to be fiddling around loosening my seatbelt on that occasion. That was in the mid sixties when they were a bit fiddly of course.

Always, like OP said, why wouldn't you?

Some of the newer buses here are starting to have seatbelts fitted which if provided, I will always put on despite the odd looks and jokes I get from other passengers. Surely a metal bar about tooth height is worse than a windsreen?

Would really love to hear the argument from someone who doesn't wear one but doubt a driving forum will have such numpties. Is it some sort of retarded rebellion? Surely there are many other other to rebel against...

The chap across the road from me is a white van driver. He claims he forgets to put his on. I pointed it out one morning as he got in. He laughed and drove off without it. Moron.

I remember when the law was introduced in Italy in the 1980s street sellers in Naples made a fortune selling these! Going off the pic looks like the chinese are at it too...
