Guy at my work a few years ago had a crash without his seatbelt on and ended up hospitalising himself for a month or so I think. The stupid thing here is he had been fined and warned about it previously.
I agree with the poster who said apart from stupidity, there isn't really a simple reason for not wearing one.
For me, car doesn't move without putting the belt on first.

Arrived at a RTA on Saturday. Country road. Guy in Nissan pickup type vehicle lost the back end on LH bend. Wibble wobbled across road, struck on coming Astra on offside front corner, and pushed it left, off the road into the bushes, and followed it in. Air bags went off in both vehicles. Astra driver semi concious laying on passenger seat with feet trapped under pedals. Serious injury to right eye. Hit A pillar or windscreen with it. Lots of cuts from flying glass. NO SEAT BELT WORN. Nissan driver slight pain in back. SEAT BELT WORN. Later heard whilst sitting in police car giving statement that the Astra driver might have lost the use of his right eye. A while ago I bumped the rear of a car that suddenly changed his mind about proceeding onto a roundabout. Me and the wife both with belts on. Airbags not deployed. Very slight discomfort from seatbelts for a few days. There endeth the lesson(s).

See it all the time.

RTC over the weekend, car v lamppost. Both air bags deployed, car written off. Both people in the car has some bruising from their belts, but that was it: they didn't even go to hospital.

And yet, there will still be people who think they don't need to belt up. Somehow they think they will be able to 1/ avoid the accident in the first place and 2/ not be injured when they do crash.

Naive or just stupid? I don't know, but the end result is the same...

a helmet, making a 90 degree turn at slow speed one winter, my front wheel hit some ice, and I crashed straight over.

Couldn't engage shoes from pedels in time, side of my head hit the Tarmac, cracked the helmet in about 6 places down one side. I am 6ft tall, on the bike head is nearer 7 ft from the ground, quite a way when you go over sideways.

ever considered that clip on pedals might have been a bad idea in that situation?

It had been sunny all week, the patch of ice was in the shadow of a bush, so the sun hadn't thawed it. These things happen.
