I think this comparison is a fair one. If I was still in my 20s I would have the Megane, now I'm 30 something with kids and not always "up for it" so I'll have the Beemer. A good review highlighting the pros of each in my mind (and coming to the same "depends what you want" conclusion that Evo came to).
Spot on and exactly what I was going to say!Whats the true ownership costs like - 3 yrs of depreciation servicing etc ?
Not remotely in the market but aren't these are the numbers to worry about as much as price ?
If the BM retains more money or costs less on a lease deal then wouldn't this swing one way or another as well.
Cost per mile or smile ?

Chris harris took the M135i around a track at a pretty much full pace, faster than most of us guys would comfortably drive. Whilst he said it would be nice to have an LSD it didnt ruin the car for him if it were to be used on road most of the time.
So how can the lack of an LSD always be such a talking point/negative point when 99% of cars purchased are going to driven on the road at 70mph with the odd blat down a motorway slip road.
Unless people are driving way beyond their limits on the road OR use the throttle as a on or off switch I don't see how it would be a problem.
For constant track use its a different story, but you would probably looking at something other than an M135i in that case.

Great review and pretty much exactly what I found test driving the M135i against the Megane
The BMW was comfortable, good seating position, great sound and terrific acceleration and mid range punch.
However when I was encouraged to push the BMW along on a B road there was no doubt that the Megane could be pushed much harder and faster.

Because it makes PHers sounds 'ardcore when they insist they MUST have an LSD. Most are actually on LSD.So how can the lack of an LSD always be such a talking point/negative point when 99% of cars purchased are going to driven on the road at 70mph with the odd blat down a motorway slip road.

Autocar did a piece with their long-termer vs one with an aftermarket LSD and said it made the car a lot better. With the amount of complaining on this thread, will the PH reviewers sully themselves and get their hands dirty by seeing how difficult it is to change a headlight bulb?I think they are comparable and I agree with what the review says.
I went from a Megane 250 to a 135i. The Megane was fantastic on track days, B road attacking and heavy rain/snow. As Dan mentions, when you're really pushing it, the Megane is excellent but you have to push it to appreciate it which I couldn't do that often (those track days would have bankrupted me! ).
135i is in similar vein to M135i and is a fantastic all round package which you don't need to belt round a track, heel and toe and grip the steering wheel to appreciate.

WARNING..
This thread may contains random views, pointless arguments and crazy counter points, mixed in with cheap straw-man arguments with a covering of RWD+FWD arguments rehashed for the hundredth time.
However.. saying that.. its Friday.. Start you engines..
It's raining. Call it providing a public service to distract from a miserable day outside... This thread may contains random views, pointless arguments and crazy counter points, mixed in with cheap straw-man arguments with a covering of RWD+FWD arguments rehashed for the hundredth time.

It's probably already been pointed out but can I just say "£29,370 as tested" vs "£37,680 (as tested".
I struggle to see how the BM is a better buy at that price, if it's as good standard as with the options fine but it seems a slanted test when one car has a list of options on it as long as your arm.

Just selling my Trophy and I have had more appreciative looks and positive comments about it than any BMW I have had. OK, its Liquid Yellow which is a lovely colour but it looks great in the metal from most angles.
Its firm riding, the back seats are a little dark and nausea inducing for the passengers and it's gizmos and systems are eccentric but it's just a fantastic drivers car.
And that LSD is fabulous, letting it do some ridiculous things at times.
The fact is ,its enormous fun, very quick in real terms, that is from a to b and entirely practical. The BMW is just not quite the sum of its parts as a drivers car and that means its a disappointment in some ways.
Depends where your priorities lie I suppose but I would say that any PHer that thinks the RWD 6 Cyl BMW is great because its more enjoyable needs to do something like this and drive them back to back. You'll be smiling a lot more in the French car (And disappearing up the road in most cases too)
