Reading this month's Evo there's a good article on future icons, two of which are the Honda NSX and the Ford GT, both of these are what I would call Supercars from Mainstream Manufacturers, who else has done this over the years?

My list:

Audi R8
BMW M1
Chevrolet Corvette
Chrysler/Dodge Viper
Ford GT40
Ford GT
Honda NSX
Jaguar XJ220
Lexus LFA
Mercedes SLS
Nissan GTR
Nissan R390
Renault A610
Toyota 2000GT

Any more?

Just supercars, I think.

Was just thinking about cars that can rival the offerings from the usual Supercar suspects (Ferrari, Porsche, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, etc) in looks, performance and price.

In that case it fits in the OP's list just nicely.

E-Type Jag deserves to be on there too really, it was quite super in its day.

I think the VX220 loses out on price and performance, good shout on the 8C, definitely on the list, the MG probably due to it's rarity and mad bhp options from the factory, but as a 4 seater I'm wavering (though I did include the GTR).

I think cars that that use exotic tech (eg the Lexus & GTR) and have a racing pedigree (e.g. the Corvette & Viper) count as well as the mid engined 2 seat exotica.

The MG SV wasn't a four seater.

The RX-7 was Mazda's supercar, built to rival Porsche at the time and did rather well too. Originally classed as a giant-killer like the Skyline as in not much money compared to its rivals but could compete against the big boys.

If we're covering all ages then the Cobra was AC's supercar and a pretty iconic one at that.

I agree, though don't agree with your reasons.

Why does super car need to be super expensive and 0-60 in 4 seconds which is pretty super.

I think it needs to have bags of performance and be able to do it in comfort, in winter and on motorways - hence it isn't and neither is an Ariel Atom.

Sorry I thought the SV was a 2+2, happy to be corrected, maybe the RX-7 and similarly the Supra in Twin Turbo guise, but since when was AC (or Shelby) a mainstream manufacturer?

Exactly it was a competitor to the NSX and is as fast - faster with a few cheap upgrades and IMO looks better.

If you let the new GTR in then surely the R32 GTR should be in too.

Which means the Supra and RX7 as well.

wink

A VX220 isn't a supercar FFS. Not even a debate here

NOTHING that has a slow version can ever be called supercar. That's my definition.

So since there are 4cyl NA VX220s, NA Auto supras, Skylines GTS, 911s which ARE NOT GT2/3 etc please don't even mention those! They are all SPORTSCARS, not SUPERCARS

Shelby came later...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AC_Cars

They were mainstream in their day, they even made trains lol

The AC Ace sports car was the predecessor to the AC Cobra

Sounds more R8 than Diablo or F40 - but I'd say the latter are more properly supercars.

You mean the McLaren Mercedes SLR

It is definitely up there, though Mercedes is a mainstream manufacturer, McLaren certainly are not, they've made only 4 (road) cars in 20+ years lol
