If you must cycle on the footpath, probably be better to not knock someone over that is famous !!!

This is why in this country it's illegal to cycle on the footpath, though it's one of those laws that are never enforced. I've even seen my local PCSO doing it and scattering pedestrians.

What gets me is cyclists cycling the wrong way in one way street. If they get run over going the wrong way I have zero sympathy for them.

Many of the one-way streets near me have contraflow bike lanes. You always get at least one knob in a car who can't read road signs though.

I was walking to work the other week and met an old guy cycling down the pavement towards me. The pavement was too narrow for both of us so to make a point I stepped in to the road to allow him past. At which point he exclaimed "DON'T WALK THERE, IT'S SUICIDE ALLEY!". I struggled to keep a straight face.

Try walking along the Marine Parade in Brighton. You sidestep the dozens of cyclists and tread straight in to a dog turd!

As it's Marine Parade I suspect some of those turds didn't originate from a dog...yuck

Wasted opportunity....

Some cyclists ride on pavements, some drivers park on them, some people get killed by cars while using pavements.

Some people are idiots, sadly...

Cycling on the pavement would work if the cyclists had consideration for others and rode sensibly. They should not expect to ride at ridiculous speeds.

Cyclists use the pavements in Tokyo which is far more crowded than London and most other cities. There they realise they have to share and are not the pig-headed camera wearing morons who we see here on youtube.

THIS is the problem in the UK. No-one wants to share or modify their behaviour to accommodate or show consideration to others. It seems to be regarded as a sign of weakness...

Having said that, footpaths are for pedestrians and as a cyclist I could not condone riding on them. However, I can also understand that as roads become increasingly busy and are often filled with speeding, aggressive drivers, some cyclists may take to them out of self-preservation.

Many roads in the UK are very hostile & dangerous environments for cyclists and it's not always possible to avoid them via alternative routes. Cyclists are literally being driven off more and more of the UK road network, despite having the legal right to use the roads. Our freedom to travel is continuously diminishing.

Curiously this side of the debate is hardly ever mentioned in the press, which instead devotes column inches to drivers complaining about traffic congestion, fuel prices and parking problems. If you think life is difficult in your car, try cycling in UK traffic...

I'm a cyclist in Brighton (don't shoot!) and always see cyclists on the footpath there, I have no idea why when there's a massive cycle path on the seafront running parallel to it (though that's normally blocked by tourists on foot frown)

How tedious. Can't you, NigelWorcs and the other anti-cycling tts go elsewhere?

The council have just had to paint big No Cycling markings on the pavement outside the shops down the road from my house to try and dissuade it. Having cycled on the road since childhood I don't understand why an adult would cycle on the pavement.

Strictly speaking, Marine parade runs from the pier to the marina. Kings Road is the cyclepath, but it's just impossible to use it through the summer since even though it's painted & marked about as clearly as you could wish for, it's just swamped with people walking on it.

The fact is that's foreseeable, the council have sited it poorly, the cyclists path really needs to be on the A259 itself, you can't blame people for walking over it in a seaside resort full of day trippers but I do know cyclists whose attitude is fk em it's a cycle path, they should know better.

Hard to see how you get through to people like that.

She should have thought twice before starring in a 1983 film that glamorised all kinds of reckless cycling.
