Yesterday I had the following work done on my car...

new cooling fan
new intercooler-EGR boost hose
new AC condenser and seals
AC re-gassed
Oil & filter service
Auto gearbox oil changed
new front brake discs & pads
Brake fluid replaced
new pollen filter

...and numerous other tweaks and modifications.

I live in Rochester, Kent and I travelled up to Colwyn Bay in North Wales - around 250 miles each way. It was well worth the trip, as the guy doing the work is an MG specialist, he knows these cars inside out, has very high standards of work. Plus, he can do all the little tweaks and mods to improve the car - things which should have been done by MGR at the design phase. Well worth the trip, and still worked out considerably cheaper than the local MG garage, even taking into account travel etc.

How far have you travelled so that your pride & joy will be in trusted hands?

I've travelled for 2 hours in the past to get work done by WGT autos. I guess that was kinda specialist work though, not sure I'd travel far for normal stuff.

Jules by any chance?

I'd have done the same if I could have got my old Rover to travel that far....

Nowhere near as far as that for mine hehe

Just a measly small 45 miles from Camberley to St Albans, or 70 miles to Fordingbridge, for my cars hehe

GTI Engineering in Towcester(?). I used to drive up and leave it for a couple of days and get the train back up to collect it.

I can understand that, this wasn't a routine job, the cooling fan alone from MGR is about £350+vat plus fitting, and it's a front end off job to do it... so, a considerable saving to get it supplied and fitted for less than £300.

Yep, Jules. Top guy, and universally recommended by everyone I know, now including me! Some overseas 75 & ZT club members even come over on holiday primarily to take their cars to him!

I can point to a few Muggers, who I've tried once and found a reasonable service, but been shafted on my second visit.

Used to take my Scooby to Scooby Clinic in Chesterfield from Leeds on a regular basis. Nice drive through the Peak District on my route home.

Not myself, but when dropping off a 156 at Autolusso in Dunstable, I got talking with the spares team and they mentioned that they have a guy who comes up from the South of France every year in his 166 Automatic, stays the night at a Premier Inn and then drives back the next day for a service because it's too expensive and untrustworthy to get it done in France!

I'd guess its about 200 miles to WIM from York. Long way for a geometry but a great drive back!

An MG? It would have needed another service by the time you got back home. hehe (Sorry)

I've had a few cars up here in Yorks from down South, Brighton probably the furthest at 253 each way - and that had to be picked up. Oddly enough it was then sold to someone up here who still brings it in.
I think the furthest I sent a specially built engine was El Salvador and currently doing one for a guy in Finland who is talking about sending his car over, not sure yet though.

The specialist market is certainly global!

80 mile round trip to the 3s service center a few times when I had my MR2 turbo.
Not much life from the internet since a couple of years ago which is a shame as they were really good on pricing and knowledge.
I hope they are still going - they offered a cracking service....
£175 for a turbo swap? Great VFM!

I thought 45 miles might be a contender but not by the looks of things. smile

It is true though, when you find a garage you trust stick with them.
